I'm not sure if this is exactly where we should discuss the options on how we can continue being actively engaged in the development of our fellow Filipinos, but it seems it's the only space.

The short and straight answer to the question is to reach out and truly engage in developing the situation of our fellow countrymen and women who have less. How?

1. Volunteer for a well-run social development organization. If you don't know where to start, hit me up, and I will do everything in my power to connect you to something worthwhile.

2. Educate yourself about the plight of people in our country. We've heard it countless times before, there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. It is easy to be comfortable in our own bubble of school, social gatherings, and what-not, but dedicate at least two hours a week to something other than your own cozy world. Educate yourself and then advocate.

3. Be pro-actively on the side of the disadvantaged where you work. Haven't checked out the corporate social responsibility arm of your company? Now is the time. Do it.

4. As for the upcoming elections, yes, let's all vote wisely. But let's also exert some more extra effort to campaign for the candidate we truly believe can make things happen for us and with us while he/she is holding office. I personally do not have a candidate yet, and I know it will be a long and mighty struggle to make a choice, but let's just give it one big big big push. Let's make it happen. 5. If none of these suggestions off the top of my head appeal to you, let's discuss. Or discuss your thoughts with someone who'd benefit from a healthy discussion as well. EIther way, do not give up on finding a solution that you can follow through.

It was mostly borrowers not being able to pay the money back. I think it was also the lack of support - entrepreneurship/business basics - that made the program ineffective.

Like Charlie Trotter, I found your site through Merlin Mann. Your last post about denial was a great source of motivation and encouragement for when I have uncertainties about some projects I am working on (and, well, life in general). The past six months is one big incident of serendipity for me. I came home with expectations, faced unimagined realities, rediscovered my connection to our home country - and some dis/mis-connections, and now that I am leaving, I leave with resolve and with much certainty. The definition of home has become much more complex that it deserves another blog entry or an article. I am beyond glad that I had you beside me as I experienced all that I did in the Philippines. It's been wonderful, Ga. If anything, we gained a firmer and more solid perspective for us as partners and as individuals. We are beyond lucky.
