Do you realize it was dry where the race was stopped while there was hail and ice plus an active mudslide miles ahead. No weather prediction will forecast mudslides on a specific TdF route.

There was a mudslide in progress plus hail and ice before the mud-blocked road. Riders would've stopped then and there. ASO made the timely and correct decision.

None other than race leader and TT winner Alaphilippe plus Young Rider leader Bernal were fitted the night before. Presumably with a "new" skin suit.

"The suits, which are made by race sponsor Le Coq Sportif, were tailored by the brand's staff on the eve of the time trial in Pau. The brand's prototype and pattern designers made the journey from Romilly-sur-Seine to Pau to measure the leaders at their hotel while in their preferred TT position, with the suits then cut and stitched into the correct size and presented to the respective riders.

Both Alaphilippe and Bernal opted for long sleeves..."

Agreed. Nibali and Co. allowed Carapaz attack on stage 14, as if he could or would be crushed next day or on Mortirolo. All top racers, including Landa, allowed this as if Carapaz was a nobody.

Forget the fan on the ground. How many seconds did Lopez lose while he was not on his bike? It wasn't necessary to swipe at the spectator. All he accomplished was give away free time to his rivals. Lopez knows it was an absolutely dumb reaction.
Losing precious time is his penalty.

Nibali was watching for Landa to attack, not Carapaz. He knew how dangerous Landa is and stayed with him and Roglic. I'm guessing Landa also didn't know what Carapaz was capable of, so he too stayed with Nibali and Roglic.
Apparently no one but Carapaz knew he was for real. So, he held on on Sunday, to Nibali's surprise. Carapaz held on Mortirolo. To all but Nibali, Carapaz was a surprise.
Nibali knew on Tuesday evening he wouldn't succeed for the rest of the week, he knew Carapaz was solid and the Giro was settled.
