They're germinated as episodic instead of a long running miniseries where nothing is safe. That's part of what made Battlestar Galactica such a hit. Something like the black smoke monster was a prisoner exiled from Jupiter by his fellow smoke monsters. The smoke monsters realize only after its exile that civilization is blossoming on Earth but refuse to get involved on philosophical grounds. But as a gesture of good will, they tell Jack how to kill it.
