thank you! interesting to hear what you listen to - I find classical music is actually very stimulating, I seem to get all wrapped up in where it's going and completely lose the plot if I'm writing (no pun intended!). sometimes i think I should just tune the radio between stations and listen to white noise....!

I definitely agree that this exhibition needs to come to Penarth or Cardiff! Have you considered using Pierhead in Cardiff Bay to put on the exhibition? You should contact Vaughan Gething as the Assembly Member for Cardiff South and Penarth to sponsor the event - basically he just gives permission for the exhibition to go ahead and then you can use the Pierhead free of charge. as for the sleeping, you should definitely try the buddhist centre there if your trouble stems from an inability to relax/clear your mind - meditation is perfect for that - it's hard too, but it works (so far!)

It's a sign! I reckon it's gonna be amazing. I've never been to an ATP before - and I'm not the biggest fan of Belle & Sebastian (Bellend and Sebastian, haha) - but I'm open minded and willing to have my mind changed. Plus there's a water park! With slides!

Hey Marie! I just looked in my copy (only got it on Friday) and you are right - I didn't see any of the photos before the book went to print and that's definitely not her! It was taken on NYE 2008 at Webster Hall in New York - I think it's woman who was an opening act. I've told the publishers and they said they are going to change it for the reprint. ARGH! hope you enjoy the book petite monstre! xxx

Hey Ben, thanks for the comment! It's good to get into discussion about these things I think - I don't think it's a bad thing that we only saw half of the play (the same half) - I liked that fact that the narratives diverged and then converged again, meaning the audience saw slightly different things. So perhaps if I'd seen a different half from you, I'd have given the play a completely different review! With the men in the basement - one was on the laptop, but the others were talking about business - one about the oil in Africa and the other about how to screw the legal system. As it happens I was told afterwards that one of them was a lawyer, one a businessman and the other an oil baron which I didn't realise from watching the play - but the thing their dialogue shared in common was the theme of taking advantage of a poor country and exploiting either its people, its land or its resources (in this case, oil). And I made a real effort to move around the basement and listen to what each person was saying - if you were just concentrating on one actor perhaps it would be difficult to understand what was going on. I liked the fact that its focus was diffuse - I guess I quite enjoy the feeling of coming out of something and being a little confused, and having the performance leave the space between the strands of meaning where I can draw my own conclusions. On the other hand though, my boyfriend came out scratching his head (he had never read Heart of Darkness, and he saw a different half of the play than we did). I guess you could view it as a fault that people have such different experiences of the same performance, but I think that only adds to your post-mortem chats about the play...!

Thanks again for your message though - I think it's great to have stimulated the debate. That is, after all, the point of art, isn't it? And if it isn't, it bloody well should be.
