I use Scrivener on my Mac but unfortunately the developers have no plans to create a version for iPad, according to their website. Fingers crossed that that change their minds...

Re: iPad for Directors | Part 3 | Organising References

I'm glad you're enjoying it! Thanks for the heads up... It's definitely useful for some directors.

Re: iPad for Directors | Part 1 | Introduction

Hello Claas, I'm glad you're finding the blog useful. The iPad as a remote monitor is both a new and expensive trick. There is a way of doing it if you shoot on RED. Have a look at Part 2 of this blog, there's a link there at the bottom. No support exists for other cameras yet but hopefully it won't be too long! I'm going to try and figure out a workaround at some point. Theres also talk about making the iPad a preview monitor for digital SLR cameras. Have a google, you'll find a lot of talk on this.

Re: iPad for Directors | Part 1 | Introduction

Sounds great. I think you highlight an interesting perspective in terms of downloading as a kind of "audition" process for a movie before buying. I've watched many films in the cinema, hated them and walked out. Yes, you feel robbed and cheated. I suppose what trailers were supposed to do have become too clever in their manufacture. We all know a bad movie can be made to look great in a trailer. We don't trust them. This old-school process of "auditioning" a film before we see it maybe dead and buried. Is downloading the whole film the new trailer?

I just wish there were more downloaders like you! Enjoy the movie. Let us know what you think...

Re: two years work downloaded in six minutes

Unfortunately not. Ripping DVDs is very easy. But I'm not intending to cry about it - I think, in a bizarre way, it's been quite positive! :)

Re: two years work downloaded in six minutes

Well said re: the mars bar! I repeated it above so 'yomamma' could read it.

I totally agree with you about immediacy and convenience. In hindsight it's something we should have done (or maybe should do...) but we really didn't realise how popular the film would be on download. Let's face it, we're a British independent movie with little or no publicity. If someone said that my movie would have been downloaded 220,000+ times in the first weeks I would have laughed. The downloaders are having the last laugh now, I guess!

Your approach to supplying a paid download to feed this immediacy is totally the right idea. I applaud you for doing it for your film. Can I ask how it's doing? I'm intrigued (drop me an email - blog@philm.co.uk) But here's where the confusion lies - if you're tied up in selling to territories via the traditional distribution routes how many of them will be happy if you make your film available on the internet world wide before they can press and release their own DVDs? If I was given a choice between traditional releases or internet, I'd still go traditional!

We are definitely moving into a period of transition for independent distribution with the current state of the industry. Will everything indie be internet soon? What will happen to indie cinema chains? Will studios embrace illegal downloading rather than send futile legal letters out to people?

You're right though. There's no beating it. The big question is how to make money alongside it and use the free "publicity" to your advantage.

Re: two years work downloaded in six minutes

Life is expensive? Maybe. Illegal downloading is peoples only choice? Not really. And YES, I think it is fair that people miss out if they can't afford the original.

I think ZenFilm's comment (way down at the bottom of the page) sums this up well... Would you think about going into a shop and running out with a Mars bar shouting "but I'm an avid fan of chocolate why should I be denied?"

Well said. :)

Re: two years work downloaded in six minutes

Hi Col. I'm glad you've come across this discussion as an independent filmmaker and I hope the responses are proving interesting - that is the whole point of the blog after all... to highlight the problems and start the discussion on how others can learn from it.

Do you think the message at the end of a movie will be enough? You're relying on the conscience of a group of people who probably download "illegal" content quite regularly. You're right - ten people might donate having read the message but is this enough? We aim to recoup the budget (for ourselves or our investors) in order to make another film. I'd say the majority of people don't watch credits (maybe thats another discussion!) so the placing of the text - if you were to go down that route - is also important.

I don't mean to shoot your idea out of the air, but for me it doesn't seem like a liable option - but it also depends on the budget. If you made a film for £50 then suddenly you could be in profit. If it's £250,000, like THE BUTTERFLY TATTOO, it would provide a little more difficult.

I checked out your myspace page and MANCATTAN sounds interesting. I wish you luck with it! Let me know what distribution route you decide to go down. Even after this download debate, I'd still always go for the traditional route. I shoot my films to be seen on the big screen and not on a computer monitor encoded and compressed into a fuzzy mess! :)
