Once again, great episode!

In my opinion, one of the most important things is, that the player who performs a piece knows every phrase and really feels that phrase. It's essential to hold the tension within this phrase. If you're able to "articulate" those phrases right then you can transfer much more of the feelings of that piece to the audience.
Knowing all the phrases of a piece and especially articulating that phrases convincingly makes a piece much more easy to listen to and also allows you to express as much as possible of your feelings while playing, even though you'll never be able to give the audience that intense feeling you have during your performance.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

Hey Tom! You're brave to say that you didn't look up at the conductor! I agree with you that it is important to listen to the orchestra and go with them, even if their rhythm isn't alway correct! Especially on the xylophone.
But when I play timpani or anything like that I think it's very important to keep in touch with the conductor because you're the only chance for him to change the tempo in most cases (when the rest of the orchestra doesn't dart a glance at him)!
In my opinion it's a kind of balancing act wether you play by ear or with the conductor. Always depending on the very situation.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

hey jeffsass!

I'm trying to give you some answers to your questions:

1) yes, you have to adjust the caps in the lower register more than in the upper because the needed change (e.g. because of temperature variation) multiplies with the wave length of the tone's frequency which increases in the lower register.

2) physically speaking: if there is a temperature change of 10°C (e.g. playing in a cold church or the other way on a hot summer day) you have to adjust the low C cap 22mm. The necessary adjustment on c4 would only be 0.69mm

3) One reason for different shapes of the resonator in the lower register is that a round λ/4 resonator would require a length of 1.32m (low C) which isn't possible unless you bend the resonator like on the Mallatech.
The new BassoBravo resonators on the MarimbaOne uses Helmholtz-resonators (C-G#). Those resonators doesn't require a length depending on the wave length but a damping volume for the spring-mass system which is the air within the resonator (spring) and the air within the inlet port at the top (mass). And so they increase the volume by changing the shape oval (MarimbaOne) or rectangular (Adams...) or any others.

I hope I could give you some information and as I'm no expert on this topic please correct me if their is anything wrong!

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

Hey Tom! Congratulations to your anniversary PATV!

Thanks for talking on my last comment on the resonator topic in your PATV. I'm really interested in this and try to learn further aspects of all that complex field.

I think we really have the possibility to change some things if we keep on growing and communication on this network. Would be great if we can get the manufacturer to listen to us and let them react on our needs or complains.

I also like the idea of some PATV stuff (T-shirts, caps, maybe some PATV branded mallets :D ). I think I could be the first one who wears that in Austria ^^!

I'm really looking forward to your next shows and their topics!

Tabula3Rasa
