Awesome post Rachel,
Although in addition - I think that in both cases, the differences in reactions could also be more to do with the timing. In the Matthew Johns case - we saw an investigative report from a current affairs program which went in depth to show what explicitly happened about a year prior (I think it was a year the incident occured prior to the 4 corners story - can't remember), which in turn had your ACA's and TT's (despite being the un-credible shows they are) also go into a further developing story which showed a circumstance that skewed people's views somewhat.

Kyle & Jackie O's case the story was more immediate, it happened live there and then with listeners. The girl being in her teens added to the impact of all the media scrutiny in the segment, and from what I have seen - there have been more more passionate callings for the radio team's head because of that.

In the last few days though I have seen a growing amount of people on twitter / facebook and other forums showing support behind Kyle & Jackie O over this too, which worries me about standards in society overall.

No not really... I kind of do that too, although fb is more a semi replacement to email really for me. I'm getting too overawed by social networking in general. I wonder what level social networking will become in a generations' time. Probably unbearably so, so much so we forget how to actually interact with each other.

Sorry for getting off the topic, but I feel like a rant about these kind of things sometimes.
