That's not healthy :)

We just wanted a place that was easier for us to find content we were interested in, without having to wade through hundreds of things we weren't all that interested in. That doesn't mean the content we weren't interested in was bad content, it just wasn't for us, regardless of who posted it. Ya know?

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

See ya there my friend :)

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

Yup :) exactly why we created Manteresting.

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

(Manteresting cofounder here)

Awesome thoughts and I agree on a lot of points.

We never set out to actually compete with Pinterest. I doubt we ever will compete with them in all honesty, but we set out to fill a need we saw in the image bookmarking (ie Pinterest) market. A need we had ourselves, for a Pinterest that wasn't so one sided, where we'd be able to find more things we were interested in.

We weren't as into Pinterest as our wives because there just wasn't enough content for us to find there. Looking at my own boards isn't all that fun. I've seen them already, and they weren't getting much traction with the other members of Pinterest because 80% of the user base being women, my content didn't appeal to them. Part of social networking is having your content reshared, and sharing what you find from others to your own followers and that wasn't all that possible for a man on Pinterest in the earlier days or even today depending on what your own interests are and what your personal network is like.

I know my cofounder (happily married, awesome guy, his wife an avid Pinterest user), and I myself, do not dismiss Pinterest or any feminine content posted there as beneath us, and we actively encourage our users to be respectful in what they post, as much as we can encourage a group of almost 50,000 guys...

Pinterest is an amazing platform. It's being used in ways I doubt the founders ever thought it would be. If a guy feels he will find more content he is interested in on Pinterest, or will be able to connect with his friends/peers better on Pinterest..whatever the case may be, by all means, I hope he signs up and uses Pinterest. The same goes for Manteresting though as the communities are drastically different, the atmosphere as well as the content.

I won't get into the whole conventional beauty issue. It's a problem, absolutely. Is it Manteresting's responsibility? Yea in part it is, as it is for any individual, but like you said, conventional is conventional and that won't change overnight. We moderate content by our TOS and encourage our community to be good guys but can only do so much.

Thanks again for the thoughtful comment.

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

I'll say this, under our TOS, content must be safe for work. No nudity. No nipples. No excessive side, under or traditional boob. No southern bits of any kind, male or female.

The site must be safe to browse at work and with a very small handful of volunteers (3 members}, my cofounder and I, we do our very best to keep the site clean. Anyone, registered or not, can report content to us, and we police the site as often as possible on our own.

We've also done our best to encourage the community to, if they must post pictures of women, keep them classy, clothed and beautiful. You'll see some of our encouragement hit the Popular page and stayed there (http://manteresting.com/pop... ). See spot #1 and spot #4.

Our community in general supports the TOS. We get more complaints about nudity than anything else and we are so grateful for the majority of our community standing behind our TOS and encouraging others to keep things clean too (many of our users have posted similar examples of safe and classy pictures of women and have encouraged the rest of the community, on their own, to keep things clean.)

The People section is just that, people. For guys, "People" includes Batman, Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood and their favorite sexy celebrity. On a user generated content site, we do the best we can to keep the content clean. We tell members of Manteresting what they absolutely can't post via or TOS as well as via moderation/email when the TOS is violated, but we cannot decide for them what they do post.

I'm open to ideas though. How would you suggest we address the harmful viewpoint of women about what is important?

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

The People section is just one category on the site and yes, it's heavy on the female side but you'll find the same type of content when visiting Pinterest Fitness or Photography sections. Is our People section vs those sections on Pinterest more offensive because guys posted the images instead of girls posting them?

This is user generated content, we don't control what goes up as long as it doesn't break TOS (Nudity, pornography) and yes, men tend to like the beautiful women but women do too right?

I'm not defending the stereotypes and won't get into how the media has created the perfect image that no real person can live up to, but it is what it is...

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

Right on ;) thanks for the objective and thoughtful comment. You know, we've heard from so many ladies that joined the site that they were excited to find a similar Pinterest look and feel but with more diverse content, or more rough content, or more funny content. Exact words from one of our female members, "awesome to have found Manteresting, I'm so tired of the cupcakes and puppy dogs". We heard similar statements from handfuls of women when we first launched.

I still browse Pinterest from time to time but it's nice to have another perspective every now and again right? :)

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

Hey, who doesn't love Lisa Frank ;)

Re: Manteresting - Pinterest Site For Men

Manteresting Cofounder here, thought I'd chime in and give a little info as to why Manteresting exists. First, it was launched over a year ago when Pinterest was still 85% women. Since then, that percentage has come down a little but still remains mostly women.

The problem with 80% women is that yes, there may be interesting stuff on Pinterest for guys but wading through all the puppies and wedding dresses was painful -- for example JoAnn's Fabrics may carry wood glue but I wouldn't go there to get it. I'd go to Home Depot because trying to find the wood glue among all the fabric, scrap booking, crafts, isles of beads and glitter would be more time consuming than going to Home Depot where wood glue would be next to the wood in the lumber isle.

Manteresting isn't just about the content though, it's about the community. Like you pointed out, there is plenty of overlap of content between the two sites, but the community interactions around that content differ. Even the content shared by women (yes, we have about 20% ladies on the site, imagine that!) is interacted with differently than it would be on Pinterest which makes finding content that's important to guys easier.

We love Pinterest and don't intend to compete with them, we just wanted to create a place that was easier to find great male related content on. We've since explosive growth since day one (okay, day 9...) and generally get feedback that others like the idea and are happy to have a less 'fluffy' Pinterest, from both men and women.

As far as pushing boundaries, "you haven't seen nothin' yet!" We have lots of boundary pushing features in the works. We are an actively developed site with lots of ideas for the future.

Re: How To Drop Your Data Plan And Keep Using Your Smartphone - by Tim McCormick

Exactly what I've got going. My wife is a photographer, but the weddings we have attended since she started doing photography professionally already had photographers hired so we took photos, and between the wedding and reception, touched them up, got them developed at a one hour photo and put them in some nice frames we picked up that same day. So we gave them fresh pictures from the very day, it was pretty cool to hear how surprised they were, especially since they didn't get the pictures from the photographer they hired for a month.

Re: REDIRECT: Personal Finance Roundup: Boosting Your Income

A very welcomed topic right now, thanks for including me here!

Re: There and Back Again [Day 30 – 30 Days to Creating Irresistible Presence]

Well that is a surprise! I can't understand how anyone could just turn their back on a promise they made to another, even if that other is a nasty ol' bank. I am currenty upside-down in TWO mortgages and the thought of walking away never crossed my mind. I wasn't buying the house for a quick turnaround so either way I will be waiting for at least five years, and by then my hopes are that the market will level off and I will have some equity. Either way, it's not right to walk away from a mortgage regardless of the worth of the home.

Re: The Greatest Gift You Can Give a Mentor [Day 21 – 30 Days to Creating Irresistible Presence]

Hmm that is really interesting to think about. I've been trying to get help from a couple people I admire and it hasn't exactly worked out. I think the problem is, although I do follow their advice (not given directly to me) and glean what I can from their actions, I never tell them about it! I simply ask for more, and I see now that is one sided. I do offer that "if you need anything let me know" kind of deal, but they never take me up on it. This post is a real eye opener!
