I do. They're fantastic -- as talented and hard working as any other students in the Physics department here at SU, if not more so -- and many of them wouldn't have the opportunity to study here without programs like this. So, yes, there is a vast untapped potential amongst people who aren't normally groomed or encouraged to pursue science at this level.

Re: Francis Lam’s Ginger Scallion Sauce

I think there's an error in your recipe: one should *not* use canola oil. Lam's recipe (to which you link) explicitly warns, "definitely no canola, which, when heated like this, smells like a fish. And not in a good way." He recommends peanut or corn oil.

Re: It's Release Week for Ubuntu and CohesiveFT

Do you plan on supporting 64-bit Ubuntu builds?

Re: iPhone apps I still use and my wishlist

No, you're not missing anything; I'm apparently on crack.

Re: iPhone apps I still use and my wishlist

Doesn't the Google app do email search? I was thinking about Amazon S3 but I haven’t found an easy desktop client that makes it simple for our needs."

Look at JungleDisk. 1st-rate Mac support, their Pro product is worth the (paltry amount of) money, and it's constantly being improved.

Edit: whoops, I didn't see the earlier comment. Make that, "ditto".

Re: [bijan sabet] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

I couldn't live without my (Safari) bookmarks bar -- I use it constantly. http://www.grabup.com/uploa...

Cmd-<number> access to bookmarklets is a killer feature.

Some of my bookmarks are unused, out of date, or overly optimistic (e.g., Evernote), but most of them are in heavy rotation.

Re: [bijan sabet] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

I live in Madison, WI. A culture of scooter-driving somehow developed amongst the 35k+ UW students a few decades ago (maybe just because the campus is big and the winter is cold and no one wants to walk any farther than necessary half the year). You see literally thousands of them on campus on any given day.

The problem goes way beyond bad driving (although it's not insignificant that many of the benefits in the article are contingent on driving badly -- beating traffic, zipping through parks and sidewalks, etc.). Even if everyone drove nicely, they'd still sound like weed-wackers, spew much nastier fumes than cars, and jam up the curbs when they're parked. (Maybe the parking could be solved by reallocating car parking -- but that's also one of the reasons people use them, because they can park next to the building rather than down the street.)

Re: [bijan sabet] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

I live in a city with zillions of these, and they're despicable. One is cute. Two are okay. Three or more and you want to take a tire iron to the drivers. They're noisy as hell, they spew _horrible_ noxious fumes (you have to turn off your vents when you're behind them), the drivers all drive like this reporter did (weaving around traffic, failing to obey traffic laws) regularly getting into accidents and hitting pedestrians, and they litter the sidewalks, trees, and poles when they're parked.

Be careful what you wish for.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

For no reason I can explain, I think bijansabet.com sounds classier than bijanblog.com for a domain.

For the blog title, I like plain old owner names (e.g., "Bijan Sabet") over "bijansabet.com" or "bijanblog", because titles don't accomplish much by conveying their own technology (.com) or media channel (blog). They should convey their subject or mission or theme. It's not the New York Newspaper, it's the New York Times. This is a blog, but it's not *about* being a blog.

But I'm just one man, you don't really know me, and it's your blog -- so you should go with the name that you think is most nifty.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

Out of desperation, for the past year I've been shunting all email to two inboxes -- one "direct" inbox has every message on which my actual email address is an explicit recipient (to or cc). The other is my "bulk" inbox which contains every message addressed to a list to which I subscribe, or which otherwise was not sent to me specifically.

In a pinch, when some email must go unread, at least I can easily skip the impersonal, group emails and not the emails addressed to me personally.

This is lame, of course. The goal is not to have to skip (non-spam) email. But it greatly improves the speed and quality of triage when triage must be done.
