On the contrary I believe social media will replace search and this report is showing that trend. Web 3.0 anyone?

The example in the comments by Rory, "I don't think many people would go to Facebook to find a local plumber", is a prime example.
If I search for a plumber in Manchester on a Search Engine I'd get something like 385,000 results and no way of knowing who's going to rip me off, or be reliable.
If I was to ask/search in Facebook I'll find plumbers that are recommended by my friends. Although I might not get as many results, I'll find a plumber who I know did a good job at a fair price when fixing my mate Rob's u-bend.
End of the cowboy plumber/builder?!

yep just enter the hashtag into the search box. It matches whatever anyone has said whether that's a full RT or just a hashtag; as long as that 'phrase' has been mentioned.

Hi, at the moment every mention of the URL or Phrase, unless it's an @ reply is counted as an entry. The thinking behind this was it's a public message, so it's exposure, an @ reply won't been seen by all their followers as so doesn't class as an entry.

I realise this isn't very flexible - the good news is I'm currently recoding twitrand and plan to add in more features, one of them is to have the option to limit the people found to one entry each.

I'm fighting for time to fit in the recode but i'm getting there!

looks like it's working again for now - I think it just hit the Twitter rate limit.
Sorry for the downtime, I am working on recoding this completely so it's more reliable.

I'm actually recoding twitrand at the moment, the core functionality will be the same but expect a nicer design, more features and more importantly better reliability.
I'm also planning to alter it to be even more random - it will use true random numbers from atmospheric noise rather than a mathematical function!

At the moment, for retweets, twitrand pulls all matching tweets regardless of the date but is limited at 1500. I'm currently recoding twitrand from scratch and hope to overcome this problem and allow a date range to be searched.

I've just tried it and it seems to be working for me. Maybe the Twitter API was throwing a wobbly? Can you see if it works now?

Hi Jane,

Due to the sheer amount of users on Twitter and the speed at which it changes it's not really possible to generate a random number and go to that user associated.
However, the public timeline http://twitter.com/public_t... will probably be a good place to just pick someone at random. The amount of Tweets means that if you just pick the first person from the public timeline it's as random as your going to get!

This would be pretty hard to track.
At a guess, you'd have to check all your new followers, if they retweeted your message and if any follower of theirs then became a follower after the date of that retweet - even then you're not 100% sure they followed because of that particular tweet (they could find the message from another source).

I think this is probably out of the realms of twitrand - but good luck writing a script to calculate it!
