Pick three key attributes or features, get those things very, very right, and then forget about everything else." That can be incredibly hard as a startup - which features are our core? Our beta users say they want X, Y and Z - where do we draw the line?

Two important lessons I've learned as an entrepreneur are: 1. Keep things simple, and 2. Finish developing one component to completion before moving onto new features. These are lessons learned fastest the hard way, after feeling the pain of needlessly complex projects and being held accountable for hitting deadlines in the midst of scope creep.

Great points!

- Pete Kistler
CEO, Brand-Yourself.com

Re: University to Provide Online Reputation Management to Graduates

Great points, Marc - we're constantly releasing new features including a Social Media Report Card that's in the works. The goal is to include detailed analytics like you pointed out, down to the user's activity on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and the blogosphere.

- Pete Kistler

Re: University to Provide Online Reputation Management to Graduates

Kevin:

You're right. 80 million people are Googled every day! This has huge implications for everyone, not just recent grads. It's great to see Syracuse University helping its students manage their careers by giving them tools to navigate the sometimes overwhelming landscape of social media.

Bruce:

Thanks for the feedback, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to improve the system. Thoughtful targeting combined with strategic Google alerts can be exceptionally powerful. One of my friends went into a job interview having received a Google alert about the company an hour earlier. It's tough to come up with power verbs like these on our own, especially since we're brainwashed from the get-go to stick to bland verbs like "managed." Bleh!

I will always choose an applicant who *championed* a project over one that simply *oversaw* that same project. Simple semantics really allow you to read between the lines about a person. Always make sure you're articulating your value with appropriate verbiage.

Happy new year!

- Pete Kistler
CEO, Brand-Yourself.com

Re: The Sure-Fire Way to Achieve Your New Year’s Resolution for Your Personal Brand

Ryan,

I LOVE this post! Personal branding is an ongoing process, not just a one-shot deal. It's amazing how many people get caught up in the moment and lose sight of the long-term. In high stress situations like airports, it's often helpful to ask: "Looking back a week from now, what would I wish I had done in this situation to make the best of this?" Then it becomes clear what next step you should take - and it never involves, "keep yelling at the agent." It can be hard to pull yourself out of the moment, but providing yourself with perspective from the future often helps.

I had a similar experience with a woman and a gate agent at the Mexico City airport. She was convinced that the gate agent had singular control over air traffic in and out of the United States. Plus, there was an English-Spanish language barrier that made it impossible to clearly articulate her argument.

I think you hit the nail on the head in your closing remarks: "Every conflict is an opportunity for growth." Use highly stressful environments to improve the way you make conscious decisions. Very little meaningful personal growth happens when we're always in our comfort zone!

- Pete Kistler
CEO, Brand-Yourself.com
The first platform to diagnose, manage and monitor your personal brand online
pkistler@brand-yourself.com

Re: How to Turn Your Wall Into a Dry Erase Board for $15

Amazing!
