Time is not the enemy most think it is when dealing with old computers. I'd look at Word, actually. If you have the version that is not current (Was it called 2003? I could never stand the thing) then it was written for the old PowerPC Macs, and not the new Intel macs, so it had to convert everything it did into the new instruction set. Word, in general, makes Macs drag ass, so to speak. You have alternatives that are kind of icky, like OpenOffice.org or incredibly geeky, like LaTeX. Or you can get the current version of Office that is written natively for Intel Macs.

Or get like me and get an ultradorky wedge stand with a fan built in and put your computer on that. But that's like taping your glasses together; you're asking for trouble.
