One with no retweet noise and one with it. The Real Time Web Works in the Backend

hI Jerome,
PHP doesn't have a problem with AJAX. That isn't the issue. AJAX Comet is an additional technique in using XMLWebRequest (AJAX) but it require the server can handle multiple connections and process at the ame time.

The reason PHP has a problem with the AJAX Comet model is that it forces all web requests to happen serially. Basically only one person can be served at any one time. Since PHP is fast though in processing that user's request, it doesn't really cause an issue. You really want to get the request, do what you need to do, and return it as quick as possible in PHP. If you have a person with a page that is open taking forever to process and return, everyone is put in line until they finish. The reason why PHP can't handle mutlitpe simultaneous requests is one that reaches back to its legacy and the numerous libraries it calls that are not thread safe.

In this model with Comet, you are intentionally leaving it a connection open, so you are in effect blocking anyone else from making a request.

The other problem is that PHP doesn't come with any threading type concepts. You can't really write a blocking queue system unless you have locks, mutexs, and threads. Since PHP can still run as a CGI processor (where each request open an instance and closes it) you can't persist in memory to handle a queue like that to easily (I can think of a hack but it nothing more then a hack).

Possible in PHP 6 or PHP 7 we will see the support we need, but currently PHP can't handle. It's not exclusive to PHP though. Perl 5 (entirely single threaded), Apache 1.3 (entirely single threaded), in a limited capacity Apache 2.0 (with patches is perfect), ASP.NET and/or IIS (in a limited capacity eat to many resources to handle it effectively IMHO).

The only tool kits that are ok at it are Java (with Jetty Webserver), Python (not with mod_python but a pure python webserver possibly with mod_proxy from Apache), Ruby (to difficult to explain here but its hard enough to scale) and a few others.

Re: Push Technologies over HTTP - Part 1

Hi Jemimus,
I recorded another video to explain.

Zac

Re: RCA Small Wonder EZ300HD Review

So if I download ffmpegx it will make it so I can use iMovie?

Re: RCA Small Wonder EZ300HD Review

iMovie is one of the most picky softwares.
