Good goal, but why do we have to compare ourselves to Silicon Valley? Us and every other region wants to be the next SV. We are not SV. Nor will we be. So let's just do what we do without the inapt comparisons. :)

Yea. My wife watches CBS soaps and she hates the scaled down, harsh lighting, handheld camera feel that they seemed to have adopted. She says they've definitely gone downhill. :)

Awesome tips. The other way to get into cool events for free, is to organize one. Yea, it's a lot more work and time, but the rewards for putting on an excellent conference with good buzz is priceless.

Find bar camp like events and just put it on. For example, I've organized Startup Weekend Columbus and Ingnite Columbus. I'm also organizing WordCamp Columbus. Some are free to begin with, but again, do it for the awesome networking.

One of the Startup Weekend Columbus groups are doing a project based on Mechanical Turk. Was SpotWurk, now called Joe Metric. http://joemetric.com/ They even have some funding.
