It saddens me beyond words to learn of another death due to breast cancer. She will be remembered with respect and affection. Making the best shot, at the right target, in the the moment that's most effective takes more that just the CEO. Brook, you are right on in calling for outside reinforcements.

It's essential to keep more than one type of adviser: a growing network of industry experts can provide insights on trends; a select group of C-level executives from across a number of industries who can integrate the complexities of the changing market; network builders who are capable of introducing people in the two former categories; and, finally, catalysts who will help to foster strategic thinking in conversations that accelerate innovation with these network partners.

Spanning boundaries of expected thinking and planning is both an ongoing task as well as a unique opportunity in critical times of transformation. Thanks for encouraging more engagement with others as a route to success.

Re: Firing Can Be the Best Thing You Can Do for Somebody

Let me go one more step forward. Ric speaks to workplace as community. Yes . . . and that community, which is tasked with providing goods and/or services to internal or external communities is on a trajectory. From its founding, through phases of expansion and contraction, merger and acquisition, rebranding and market changes, the company needs members to keep it in the game.

When those important transitions occur, the status quo is challenged. New talent may be acquired that supports the new vision. Existing workers may not fit with the new talent. They may stand firm to avoid realigning, upgrading skills or changing measures of success. Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Lower performers most often stay the course and prevail since the culture supports their ways. The people who are shown the door first may be new talent who were hired not to fit in. The result is a short term win for the community . . . and a blip in the trajectory.

Re: Wild Blueberry Picking in New York’s Harriman State Park

Be sure to use insect repellant to ward off the deer ticks.

Re: Cancer patients who are positive in the face of terrible adversity

Jimmie Holland, MD is a terrific woman - and someone I have had the pleasure of knowing. There were few standards and any I imposed were not favored by either students or the administration. It was a struggle. I was the Dean of Distance Learning for a comprehensive college and oversaw 4 undergraduate degree programs and 5 graduate degree programs. There were strict standards that the faculty and administration had committed to. The students learned, were satisfied with the expectations, and graduated. In both instances, the model for courses included reading, assignments and consistent questioning and dialogue to explore concepts. That was 10 years ago. Now MOOCs push content and 37K people are "enrolled". Not sure Mr. McKenzie could have been prepared for that - it certainly isn't teaching. It seems that online learning is now the equivalent of browsing the web . . . with many opportunities for misinformation, misbehavior, and misrepresentation.

Re: Join us for The CoWorking Summit

Will be there in spirit.
