I'd imagine that in the upper echelons of the DA, when it was discussed whether or not to turn majority control over to the general populace (as Obama did), they decided that there was too great a risk of the political equivalent of "brand damage", that they chose not to.

Evidently, they already have their campaign and their message sorted, so they're most likely viewing their SM strategy as an extension of that, rather than a foundation.

Re: If Google was Iran, wouldn’t we be scared right now?

U can haz global dominashunz!

I'm surprised the directors haven't had a massive falling-out-of-opinion yet (the sort of thing that splits major companies). Maybe they're all under alien mind control or something...

Since Google effectively controls the online media, we'll never know.

Re: Bend over for the mobile networks

@JC there's an even easier way: http://getbundle.co.za . I think I'll point them all out later. Too much work to do right now :/

In short, Wezzo, you've hit the nail on the head. I think that the efforts are a little over the top...

Re: iPhone 2.0 - now with iApathy

Yeah. These days, it's all about the marketing. I mean, Linux, IMHO, can thrash Microsoft AND Apple at their own games. But it doesn't have a marketing strategy, therefore, it sucks. Gimme a break.

So yeah. We'll see what happens. I wonder when Microsoft is going to start on their line of exclusive phones. We'll probably have this huge and ugly battle between giants, Google will calmly step over both of them, and then they'll all die when people find the word "alternative" in the dictionary. Can't wait...

Thanks for stopping by :)

Re: Third World Mobile

I have 4 SIM cards, lol. But I only use one, now. So the actual penetration is probably much lower - but it's still (as you've indicated) far higher than desktop/fixed/broadband Internet access. Which makes sense - bundled data is cheaper and eaiser to use. Plus no set-up fees.

To be honest, I actually only use Gmail and Opera Mini 3 on any sort of regular basis - the latter is mostly for Twitter. I prefer desktop access. Keyboards > keypads.

Sounds like you did some hectic research for that paper. When and where are you planning on publishing?

Re: Third World Mobile

yeah, as of july last year SA had 87.08% cell phone penetration. These figures are of course skewed by ppl who use more than one sim card. But yeah, collectively Europe has already passed 100% and were on 110.15% in July last year.

Interestingly though, SA at the same time only had 8.16% internet enabled desktop/laptop penetration.

Theres no doubt that mobile based data services will become mainstream and with so many huge corporates entering this space, Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Sun and even Facebook, public awareness of the capabilities of the mobile browsers will increase and expect to see many many web services being ported onto a mobile platform!

Re: Quantum of Solace - The next 007

I think I might actually have seen that one. Look, every movie I've ever seen Brosnan in has had it's unfair share of indecent acts. He's an addict, even if he won't admit it (and I think he might have, by now)...

Re: Quantum of Solace - The next 007

Yeah, heheh. Can only help if you're running WordPress :)

Threaded replies (forgot the plugin name) and emailed responses aren't new. Subscribe To Comments for WP has been around for a while. What I DO like is the common-profile thing. Now I can track all my comments on the Disqus platform from one place - which seriously rocks.

Thanks for stopping by :)

Re: Third World Mobile

American and European networks can afford to do the uncapped access thing, but there are Fair Use limits in the TOC, which basically boil down to a certain (very small) amount per day. Or something like that.

I think the 140-character thing was my mistake, lol. But the 7490-number was his, so I'll leave it all uncorrected for sake of posterity. Maybe European networks have different standards for things like SMS? Either way, it's still very expensive.

Apparently we should hit 100% penetration in SA at some point. I've gone and misplaced the link, but if I find it again I'll let you know. Overall, the mobile industry in SA really is something to behold...

Re: Disqus - Comments 2.0

Testing 1 2 3 ...
