One could hardly come from more humble beginnings than those of a poor Black female growing up in Mississippi during the 50s and 60s. To rise to her status as arguably the most influential female in America is nothing short of astonishing. Her business acumen is spot on, but I most admire her creative philanthropy and the way she inspires and enables others to give as well.

Re: What holiday gifts are you excited about giving this year?

My best friend took her daughter and granddaughter Louisa to Disneyland last week for Louisa's 4th birthday; I was in Los Angeles visiting my daughter (who is Louisa's Godmother) and we joined them for a few days. I plan to make a photo book for my friend, her daughter, and my daughter online at Kodakgallery.com. She raises entertaining to a fine art. And her best gift is making every guest feel very, very special. I pride myself on my own hostessing skills, but it's only because I always think, "What would Patti do?".

Re: What have you done recently to make yourself feel proud?

I painted a darn good egg in art class.

Re: What are you sensitive to?

Oh, Weezie, you gorgeous creature! I never considered myself part of the popular crowd (much more of a fringe/follower), but was surprised by a comment made at my 35th reunion that others considered me so. What I find very interesting is that I was never encouraged to be "the smart one", even though my parents and teachers must have known that I was capable of it.

Re: What is your favorite cultural activity that doesn’t cost money?

I didn't get the daily Q&A today. I also think that multitasking is a huge component of not being fully present. For a long time it was billed as a super productive way of life: talk on phone, drive, put on nail polish -- all at once! Or fold laundry, have conversation with husband, pretend play with son -- all at once. ... I'm glad that research is now emerging that shows multitasking is NOT more productive in the long haul. So being in the moment can, I think, be as simple as "registering" where you are and what you're doing instead of letting your mind take your thoughts elsewhere.

Re: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

I'm jealous. In Canada we still can't get the Kindle (even if you order one from Amazon US, I believe it only works on the Sprint wireless network). I have slight arthritis in my hands and they get cramped after a while when I read; this hasn't happened with the Kindle. I thought I would miss the visceral feel of paper, but I don't. I've never become attached to any bookmarks (and, slap-on-the-wrist, tend to dogear on occasion) so I love the auto-bookmark feature.

Re: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

As a book lover too, I wonder how it (the Kindle) feels to hold onto vs. the feel of turning pages and using a favourite bookmark. Seriously, I am considering asking for one as a gift too and want these questions answered by a real book lover. I am completely obsessed with the Kindle but I think the greatest part of that gift was feeling acknowledged and appreciated by my employer. The most amazing thing about this gift was that he thought it up and purchased it all on his own a month ago. He thinks that shopping for, buying, and wrapping presents is akin to Chinese Water Torture, so this was HUGE. It was even more incredible because I had called my daughter on Monday to tell her that I would love a Kindle for my birthday or Christmas.
2) For Christmas when I was 10 years old, my single, childless aunt sent me TEN Bobbsey Twins books. This was over-the-top munificence and (up until yesterday) has always been my answer when asked about my favorite gift.

Re: What is your current, of-the-moment obsession?

1) My iPhone.
