One could hardly come from more humble beginnings than those of a poor Black female growing up in Mississippi during the 50s and 60s. To rise to her status as arguably the most influential female in America is nothing short of astonishing. Her business acumen is spot on, but I most admire her creative philanthropy and the way she inspires and enables others to give as well.

Re: What holiday gifts are you excited about giving this year?

My best friend took her daughter and granddaughter Louisa to Disneyland last week for Louisa's 4th birthday; I was in Los Angeles visiting my daughter (who is Louisa's Godmother) and we joined them for a few days. I plan to make a photo book for my friend, her daughter, and my daughter online at Kodakgallery.com. She raises entertaining to a fine art. And her best gift is making every guest feel very, very special. I pride myself on my own hostessing skills, but it's only because I always think, "What would Patti do?".

Re: What have you done recently to make yourself feel proud?

I painted a darn good egg in art class.

Re: What are you sensitive to?

Smells, unkindness, grammar & punctuation, witticisms . . .

Re: Who were you in High School?

I was the cute, funny girl who loved to party (although not slutty). I never considered myself part of the popular crowd (much more of a fringe/follower), but was surprised by a comment made at my 35th reunion that others considered me so. What I find very interesting is that I was never encouraged to be "the smart one", even though my parents and teachers must have known that I was capable of it.

Re: What is your favorite cultural activity that doesn’t cost money?

I LOVE going through old cemeteries and looking at the statuary.

Re: How do you define your self worth?

And I would never underestimate my dogs' admiration!

Re: How do you define your self worth?

My self worth is defined by my ability to make others feel good about themselves, my intellect, and my sophisticated esthetic (Sophisticated Harmony here).

Re: What do you do to make yourself present in the moment?

I don't know what this means!!! I have slight arthritis in my hands and they get cramped after a while when I read; this hasn't happened with the Kindle. I thought I would miss the visceral feel of paper, but I don't. I've never become attached to any bookmarks (and, slap-on-the-wrist, tend to dogear on occasion) so I love the auto-bookmark feature.

Re: What would you do if you weren’t afraid

Go on a medical mission trip.

Re: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

Of course mine have to do with books.
1) The Amazon Kindle I received from my husband for my birthday yesterday. The most amazing thing about this gift was that he thought it up and purchased it all on his own a month ago. He thinks that shopping for, buying, and wrapping presents is akin to Chinese Water Torture, so this was HUGE. It was even more incredible because I had called my daughter on Monday to tell her that I would love a Kindle for my birthday or Christmas.
2) For Christmas when I was 10 years old, my single, childless aunt sent me TEN Bobbsey Twins books. This was over-the-top munificence and (up until yesterday) has always been my answer when asked about my favorite gift.

Re: What is your current, of-the-moment obsession?

1) My iPhone. Other than cook dinner, what does this wonderful toy NOT do?
2) Art Class. I spent the weekend gathering ideas to put on canvas. My aspirations probably exceed my talent, but maybe not. I also think Smith & Hawken have it. Neiman-Marcus offered it the year my Mom gave it to me, but I haven't seen it there recently. You should be able to find it in most of the floral/gardening catalogues. It's a wonderful gift.

Re: What is your favorite flower? In the winter I love pansies and johnny-jump-ups, the darker the better. Spring means tulips to me - all colors, all shapes. Old roses in the summer, fully opened and smelling divine. One year my mother gave me flowers-of-the-month for Christmas; it was one of the best gifts ever!

Sophisticated Harmony

Re: Mary Jaksch asks: What’s your best way of coping with stress?

For a few minutes before I get up every morning, I lie in bed thinking about what the day holds, and how to make that all go smoothly. My daughter says that not dealing well with stress is one of my biggest faults, so I do all I can to avoid it. And avoidance is how I relieve it as well . . .
