Oh. I forgot. While I have them available, I rarely use the Google Office Suite or the Apple Office Suite. I do use Google Docs and Google Drive more than the rest. Since MS finally made iOS compatible Office apps almost as good as their desktop counterparts, I use them on my iPad a lot; especially Word. No problems, except when I doing a LONG editing session, the big 27-inch monitor with my MB Pro or Mini is better for my eyes. I have no complaints at all.

Wow. The iPad/iOS hate is strong in this section! Geez! We have so many different options and “to each his/her own!” I am a writer (nonfiction), copywriter, editor, book publisher, public speaker, business coach, and podcaster. Since 2008, when my daughters finally convinced me to leave my beloved Toshiba laptop behind and buy my first little 13-inch white MacBook, I have been solidly in the Apple camp, and I’ve never regretted it. I now have an iPad mini, an iPad 2, an iPad 10.5-inch Pro, and a 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st Gen). I rarely dispose of my old iPads, I just buy another one. I also have a 2015 MB Pro (the BEST lately) and a Mac mini—which I hook up to 27-inch monitors. I have a cover/external keyboard for all of iPads; I do not like the screen keyboard. I also still have my beloved 11-inch Air, which I bought before Scrivener came out with its iOS version. I work from my home office and my coworking community office. I have on many days gone all day with just my iPad. I also have an iPhone 8 Plus and an iPhone X (I do not use landlines). I finally added the Apple Watch 4 after my 1st Apple Watch finally died after four years. I use Ulysses and Scrivener for my own writing, and Word for Mac for editing. I work with YouTube and iMovie on one of my Macs. I have a graphic designer who works with Adobe for me. With iCloud and Dropbox, all of my files are accessible to me from any of my devices at any time, even files on my desktop screen with the “Files” app and my 500GB Transcend that’s in a slot on my MB Pro. There are still some things that I cannot do on my iPad, but that’s why I can put on my little leather backpack and travel “light” when visiting clients or going down to the Detroit River to work, and have just my big iPad Pro and my Macbook Air and have everything I need. For research, I can do split screen on both the iPad and the MacBook. I thought about getting an iMac, but I could never see myself sitting in one place at one desk all day. I like being able to work from anywhere at any time, including every floor of my big historic four-floor house. During my worktime, I always have a Mac and an iPad open at the same time, and with the new “Handoff” it is so cool to copy something from one device and immediately paste it into another device. Except for my new Apple Watch 4, I don’t see a need to buy anything else new for a while. I am a very happy camper.

What's wrong with getting speaking fees as a private citizen? At least Bill can put together a cogent sentence. Hillary did NOT transfer anything...not proven. Using campaign funds for payoffs is a FEDERAL offense, getting paid to speak as a private citizen is not.

Oh Please. I think that governor of Arkansas, president of the United States (until now), Senator from New York, and Secretary of State are *real jobs*, especially when compared to host of a reality-TV show...and as private citizens, the Clintons can make as much money as they like. At least they didn't use their offices to make themselves and their family members and friends rich while they were in office.

GREAT post, Ed! I am a freelancer, a self-employed business owner, AND an entrepreneur! I started out 7+ years ago (right in the middle of the Great Recession) with just me, a pitiful looking (as I look back now) static one-page website that I made myself (LOL), and my beloved Toshiba laptop. I now have THREE related companies, a full-time virtual assistant, several as-needed contractors, a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Retina, iPad Mini3, iPhone 6+, Samsung Note3, a home office, an office in a cool co-working community, and clients in fourteen countries. Besides, here in the States, if you can't show a profit in 3 of the last 5 years on your tax return, the IRS calls it a hobby--you have no choice. I have lots of things I like to do for "hobbies". But do you want to make a full-time high-5- or 6-figure income and lifestyle for yourself or not?!?!? If you do, then do what RuPaul says: "You Better Work!"

I have been an early riser my entire life. 4:30 - 5:00am is my usual waking time. But like another commenter here, it does no good to get up early if you haven't gotten enough sleep. You are LESS productive if you are sleepy all day. Better to get your 7-8 hours in FIRST. Also helps to plan everything (including outfit for the day) the night before.

I had no problems, either at the polling place for my Mom (a school) or my polling place (a church). Both were easy to find and easy to park, etc. Please don't generalize--maybe YOUR polling place needs work--address your concerns the Election Commission. Don't paint all of Detroit with a bad brush. We have enough of that.

Hi Ed: Pam here from Writing It Right For You (@wirfy) and Detroit Ink Publishing (@dipllc). Yes, about 90-95% of my clients now come from social media and referrals (on social media!): mostly Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter in that order. I post a lot of "value" and "information" on those sites w/links back to my websites. I also post "lifestyle" and "relationship"-type posts that have nothing to do with business (like my dogs staring at my dinner plate when I don't stare at theirs!), but show me as a *real* person. I also retweet a lot (as Ed knows!); those retweets also give value to my friends and followers. Over the past four years, I've really learned to "work" my social media, and now it's working for me!

Oh please. The POTUS was never against gay marriage. He was always for equal civil unions and he evolved to the next logical step just as he always said he would. The Americans who died in Syria died the day before. Funny how Republicans "forget" about the 3,000+ people who died right here in the US because they totally ignored the "bin laden to fly planes into buildings" report, and then lied us into an unnecessary war that killed FOUR THOUSAND Americans.

As a "gadget girl" I have an iPad2, iPhone 4S, AND an actual Kindle (and MacBook Pro and MacBook Air and Blackberry and Droid). That said, I use both iBooks and Kindle, but I use my actual Kindle the most for e-reading. The *real paper* functionality vs what you have on a tablet or computer is highly superior. I DO however, LOVE the fact that I can sync everything seamlessly on all devices. I almost never buy physical books anymore.
Besides the *real paper* here are features and benefits to having an actual Kindle--including the sharing.
That said, for those who are considering the Kindle Fire, you will NOT get the *real paper* functionality with that device--it will read the same as a tablet/computer screen. (I checked.)
I also like the smaller size of the Kindle--it is truly a one-hand operation. I will be buying the Kindle Touch when it comes out...the keyboard and zoom on the present actual Kindle are cumbersome. That will be taken care of with the new Touch.

But thanks for these tips about iBooks...I hadn't known about all of the features you mention. I'll definitely check them out.

Three years ago last spring, when gas prices hit $4.00/gallon, Senator Obama showed empathy for those who were most affected by the high gas prices--the middle class--and calmly explained that gas prices are usually cyclical and prices would come back down by the fall. He suggested several ways people could deal with the high prices in the meantime, including keeping their tires in good shape. Senator McCain gave a knee-jerk "solution" of a "gas tax holiday'--without mentioning that 1) it would take months for Congress to pass such a bill and 2) gas taxes pay for road repair and a "holiday" would immediately put 1,000s of road workers out of a job. The Republicans mocked Senator Obama's idea by running around with tire pressure gauges waving in the air.

The next fall, just as Senator Obama said, gas prices came back down to around $3.00/gallon.We haven't had gas prices under $2.00 for YEARS; YEARS; and YEARS.
