When we first moved to Vegas, we stayed here 1 year. We had the craziest year of our adult lives. So, we moved back to California. 2 years later, we moved back for good. We've been here a dozen years now and I couldn't be happier. I find it hard to imagine living somewhere else.

So glad to hear you guys are loving Vegas!

9seeds isn't a WordPress theme, we are a WordPress development team. We focus mainly on building WordPress solutions for small businesses. Be that in the form of custom plugins or site design/development. Pretty much whatever is needed.

Didn't I -JUST- write about this on MyEscapeVelocity.com? This is my point exactly. You make connections and down the line you never know what could happen. I could turn in to business or it could turn in to directions to the best beer you've ever tested. Neither option sounds bad to me!

I think the opportunity to build relationships via facebook/twitter/blogs is really exciting. The fundamentals are all the same, it's just the medium that is different. Be honest, be interested and be informative. Stick to those 3 things and the rest will work itself out. :)

Alex, at my previous company I would hear my boss get pitched all these "sure fire" ideas. The whole plan came down to some guy spouting his idea and hoping my boss would love the idea and throw tons of money/resources at it and then keep the pitchman rolling in cash. If that is anybody's idea of "networking", they've already lost.

Any time you can start off a conversation by asking what the other person is excited about and then genuinely be interested in their response, you are so far ahead of the game it isn't funny.

Thanks Suzanne. You are exactly right. I've had dinner with Chris a couple times. We spend 95% of the time talking about everything under the sun OTHER than business. We toss in just enough biz chatter so that we can write it off as a client meeting at the end of the year. ;)

That's exactly right. At the end of the day, people do business with people. No matter what, a PERSON at company X has to decide to work with a person at company Y. Getting out there, meeting people and then executing when the time comes is all that matters.

Referrals are definitely key for us. Currently we are getting more work requests than we can handle. I'm a big fan of PhraseExpress software and have a keyboard shortcut that writes out a quick "I'm sorry we can't help you, but here are a handful of other developers we know and trust". Trust me, both the client and the people we refer business to really appreciate it. And for me, it takes less than a minute.

I wrote about something similar a while back. When I go to the movies I typically want a medium soda and popcorn. When you place your order they immediately try and upsell you. I used to say no all the time. But now I step up and order a small drink and popcorn and then agree to the upsell. The result is perfect; I get what I actually wanted, they feel good about a successful upsell, and if by chance their manager is walking by and hears this happen, they'll likely get some kudos along the way.

This is a battle I find myself fighting quite often. I feel compelled to stay current on EVERYTHING which leaves too little time for actually getting things done. It's something I'm working on.

We stayed at Hotel 50 a few weeks back when we were in Portland attending WordCamp. We loved the fact that it was a 2 block walk from the Max station and within walking distance of a ton of great food and the venue where we were attending the event. The room was very comfortable and the bar in the lobby makes some excellent drinks! We'll definitely stay there again!

I also think one of the best things you can do is ask other people who they use for hosting and what their experience has been. And don't just accept the "it's been great" answer, ask them if they have ever had to contact customer service, why they needed help and how helpful the customer service was.

Every hosting company's website is going to tell you everything you want to hear to get you to plunk down your cash. I take their marketing and online reviews with a grain of salt. Your friends, they'll give you the straight answer.
