I saw those featured on Strobist and I can't wait to get my hands on some. Very cool gadget!

Re: Lens go boom

Thankfully, I have the insurance so it shouldn't cost out of pocket. I just have to deal with not having a lens for the rest of my trip.

Then again, if I was having to buy a lens again, I'd probably buy the same thing. It's a fantastic lens (sigma 70-200 f/2.8).

Re: Lens go boom

oh man! that's a horrible feeling. the only one I ever dropped was my sigma 30mm f/1.4 and it just about killed me to see all that money go *poof*. hopefully this is the last lens you'll ever drop.

the up side- new lens time! ;)
i've been eyeballing that 18-200 vr for my travels...

Re: the time really does fly

Ha. Yeah. Me too. I only had the black background and couldn't get a good fill ratio for that. But, I have a makeshift studio again as of yesterday. So. It's on!

Re: the time really does fly

Ugh... I have so much to learn for when I finally harvest a baby...

I'd like to see some less dramatic, high-key shots!

Re: Disqus vs IntenseDebate: wrap up

Worry not. I've caught word from the Disqus developers that they'll have OpenID support in the next couple of days.

Woo.

Re: Disqus vs IntenseDebate: wrap up

Well, I signed up for Disqus- seems like a cool service, but after hearing your review, I'm very disappointed they don't support OpenID (though not like I use it... yet). I totally agree with your decision to go with them versus IntenseDebate for the reasons you described- it's important to be able to easily and efficiently communicate, which is the whole purpose.

Re: guess what?

My dad has a D200 and, after using his quite a bit, while there are certainly improvements, I don't think I'd consider it justified enough to throw $700-$1000 down for (assuming you'd sell the D200).

LiveView is cool, but not really all THAT useful. Maybe doing tedious amounts of portrait sessions. Maybe.

Noise management is indeed awesome. And those that are "noisy" look more like film grain and retain a LOT more detail than I've seen in the past.

Bigger Screen is always nice.

Way better battery life.

I think your plan is a good one. Keep the D200 and hold out for a D3.

Re: guess what?

I'm quite jealous of your new toy. I hear the noise management is phenomenal. If my D200 wasn't completely adequate for my needs, I'd go with the D300. I'm still toying with the thought of going with the D3, but I think I'll wait for the next model to come out (maybe D3X...) so it pushes the price down (maybe.. didn't do it much for the D2-D2X). Really, it's so I can have a full-frame sensor for portraits (for the shallow DoF). But that's pretty damn hard to justify the price until I start doing more portraiture and have a demand for that image style.
