Ummm... I think everyone that I know in nano does creative stuff year around. A lot of theatre/photography/music majors and such. I'm the odd one out with the science degree.

And, I dunno, I don't think I've ever met a boring person before, o.o *shrugs*

In my experience, when I try to put myself out there in these social
situations is that everyone else pairs off into groups and I end up feeling
unwelcome. Its not necessarily something they are doing intentionally, not
that it helps. Probably because in the five minutes it took you to stop
being strangers with everyone else, I'm still completely shell shocked and
awkward for another half hour or more.

Of course whats even worse then not getting included is when someone goes
out of their way to include me as some elaborate act of charity. Because
then I come of as the jerk, because I'm not able to hide how offended I am
at being labeled as a charity case, by some stupid airhead woman. (and it
is always a stupid air head woman.)

There's also the fact that I find 90+% of everyone I've ever met to have
been incredibly boring, if I'm really honest its probably closer to 99%. I
have no real interest in meeting the kind of people who need a construct
like Nanowrimo to be creative. I'm really only interested in talking to
people who try to be creative the other 11 months in the year. And while
those people may be at the meetings, I have no interest in trying to
separate them from the loons that only do it because they love the event
itself.

I disagree. Going somewhere to go hang out with complete strangers,
sounds like basically my definition of a nightmare. as for irc I never
liked that. after you get more then 3 other people I completely am
unable to keep up with anything.

I'm not looking for perfect perse but the words weren't right at all.
To the point where they were changing the meaning of what I wanted to
say. and it wasn't even so much that they were the wrong words it was
that I had the right words on the tip of my tongue, metaphorically
speaking. Writing any further would have been beyond pointless. It
was making me angry, and I quit.

The only good reason to do it 'RIGHT NOW!' is for the community of
other people doing it, but I actively avoid that community(whatever,
Im anti-social) that is a counter productive reason for me to do it
now. I'll work on it later, and you'll still be there to bug me about
it anyways probably even more then you will now because you won't be
so busy writing and interacting with the nanos. So yeah I got no good
reason to do it atm so I'll go do other stuff because I have good
motivations for that.

Rough drafts aren't supposed to be perfect - yer just supposed to get the ideas out and move on. Making the words the right words is what you do in drafts two and three. Cuz if you spend all of your time trying to get the perfect words, nothing ever is accomplished (see, for example, anything I do).

I can't do that. I have already trained myself to try and make every
word count for comics, and those five words weren't up to my standards
because i knew they weren't the words I wanted, they weren't even that
close, but I couldn't get the words I wanted out of my brain. That
being the case writing further words was only an exercise in futility
and I quit. I would only end up rewriting it from scratch anyways.

Don't worry I will write this, just not in a month. I'm not capable of
that Nikki. I can barely read a 50k word story in a month.

Dude, you wasted five words! The point of nano is that it doesn't have to be good (hell, it ISN'T) - it just has to exist. Write garbage that makes no sense! That's what most people do.

yeah I have no specific problems with stargate's technobable, if only because jacks there to be like, yeah the science monsters did it, i'll pretend I understood the word formations coming out of your mouth so we can go back to killing stuff.

And that's also, incidentally, why Stargate is good at techobabble. Sam TRIES to be short and concise but then she just HAS to elaborate on the really nifty science so Jack cuts her off. McKay, on the other hand, likes to make everything sound more difficult than it really is. It's just who they are.

I think chuck wins at the technobable, because its more used to reinforce who the characters are better. Its like yes if what they said meant anything, then those characters would say that to each other because they are huge nerds.

Except the time chuck was drooling over some off the shelf dell servers. he would not drool over those no matter how big of a rack of them Castle had.

In other words, you just don't like technobabble. For me, it depends on the show. I love Stargate's technobabble because Sam and McKay make it awesome just because they're Sam and McKay (and because the show pokes fun at technobabble with every technobabble-y scene) but Star Trek often fails at it.

But PA is great cause of the essays, not the vaugely about gaming comics. XD

I've thought about it more and I don't dislike science in tv on principle, because it was done very well in Numb3rs before they jumped the shark. The problem with it on most shows is its used as conversational filler, and is more like empty calories. Numb3rs had some meaty conversations about math theories early on, dunno what they do now, after a doughy old nerdy guy went to space I stopped caring.

Ah, but science jokes are niche jokes. Anyone who isn't in the niche isn't going to like them. I can't read Penny Arcade for that reason, for example. I can't read any gaming comic, to tell you the truth.

Well thats because most episodes of star trek are awful and ham handedly written, in both the psuedoscience and the story. The episodes I walked away from enjoying though had nothing to do with the science, its always the stories premise, or some of the character moments.

I always feel like the science just gets in the way personally. maybe if it was real science then it would be more interesting, but I can't really know for sure until I've seen it done well (I encourage you to explore that in Chrono Loran.)

Though SMBC did a really great comic that did hinge on the science to make the punchline work, so I guess it can be done... its pretty rare though. http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&...

It helps if you know about orbitals first. And quantum numbers.

Classical science bores me - nothing interesting happens! Give me the weirdness of quantum mechanics!

As for Star Trek... I like their pseudo-science. Half of it is utterly ridiculous as well and it's pretty fun to laugh at. As for cultures... half the time I find them done rather ham handed so, yeah, bleh.
