Here Victor is trying to remind us all that our digital asses on hard drives have become more and more precious over time. Down in southern Mississippi I know all too well of what hurricanes can do down here. How does a 25 foot wall of water coming at your house sound? Backups are a must no matter where you live, local and offsite. Victor relies on his Mac Pro to make a side income, how can he do that if his machine is down for a day or two if he is recovering terabytes of data from his local backup.

Victor, I'd suggest going with multiple RAID 1 arrays in your Mac Pro. I'd have a two drive array for your boot disk, and two drive array for your data. If either of the drives in the array fails you still have fault tolerance and keep on running as ususal. Replace the drive and the array rebuilds itself. I have a PowerMac G5 that can have up to 5 hard drives in it. (using a G5 jive kit) I have only one user account that's on the 80GB boot disk and that's the administrator account (which is never used). All other user accounts are located on other drives, which are all standard user accounts. I followed this tutorial to move the user accounts to a different volume. http://eshop.macsales.com/R... Simply moving the user accounts via the Finder is insufficient. You *will* run into permissions problems if you do it through the Finder.

I have 7 or 8 user accounts on this G5. I wanted everyone to have access to only their own home folder with no access to any of the other mounted drives in the computer. If I had all user accounts on the boot disk with 4 other drives for general storage, this would have been the case.

I am becoming more and more of a Linux geek and command line junkie ssh'ing into remote servers all the time from my laptop or iPhone. Using Linux has tought me more about my Mac. It's all Unix under the hood and there are a lot of similarities.

I know this is a long post covering several topics but I think it's all good content and worth the read.

Re: An alternative to NetNewsWire – Vienna

Have you tried using an application called Times? I have used it a few times and it reads just like a newspaper. It is very customizable for the user to make their own and how they want to digest the news of the day. Here is the link to the developer's website:

http://www.acrylicapps.com/...

Re: Using SSH with your Mac to unlock your home.

Oh, that sounds mean but oh so darn funny. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you issued the command on Victor's remote machine.

Re: Victor on twit.tv with Leo Laporte

Wow, what an honor. Everybody hit the nail on the head when y'all were discussing this new media that goes far beyond just a podcast that is listened to on our iPod's. I am glad that the podcasters that I listen to fully support social media and how the community can support and encourage one another no matter where we live in the world. I believe that the Mac community is really pioneering this new movement. Sooner or later this concept will transform all communities and communication no matter what the topic of conversation is. This really transforms the way we involve our thoughts and ideas with others.

Brent

Re: Victor’s Mino Thoughts 06/29/2008

See I thought you were just going to flip the camera around while you were shooting this 5-10 min video. The way you explained what you were trying to do with iMovie HD sounds like you were recording the entire drive home and you wanted to speed it up to fit the audio of your voice in the 5-10 min time frame for your quick thought of the day.

Re: Victor’s Mino Thoughts 06/26/2008

155 or so applications for me. thanks for turning the camera around. it was neat to see it. i will have to google it to find some more info about it. i usually update my apps as I use them. many apps will ask you if you would like to check for updates upon startup, and I click yes. that way i dont have to remember to do this once a month etc.

Re: Victor’s Mino Thoughts 6/23/2008

I really like the fact that you communicate with the listeners of the show. I think that out of the 40+ podcasts that I am subscribed to that you do the best job of posting the information that you have learned from other Mac geeks on the TMU podcast or the Mino / youtube videos. You show is just another avenue of where I learn and get my information. I am a member of several forums myself and I occasionally ask a question but most of the time I enjoy answering questions asked by others. I love solving problems and helping out others that may not know as much as I do. I am not arrogant about it i just enjoy helping and I think that you Victor are the same way. I consider you a down to earth guy that loves learning and sharing that knowledge with others. That's my $.02 on your thoughts for the day.

Re: Victor’s Mino Thoughts 6/20/2008

I mainly use twitter as another RSS feed as I subscribe to people are publicly known in the Mac community.
