I grew up in NY-23. I also grew up in a variety of other district numbers and somehow accomplished this without ever once moving. I'm becoming convinced that NYS redistricts and renumbers on a regular and random basis. Do none of these people understand that the economic crisis that is happening in the rest of the country is old news to upstate NY? That stuff is more than 25 years old and it's never stopped. If political candidates who want to represent the area don't understand this, they're doomed. The recession/depression started when the mills and factories closed up and moved out of town. Far more than half of my old hometown's downtown is vacant with boarded up windows. The nearby cities and towns haven't had growth or jobs in years.

Eileen- no real word on Simon's pick for Adam yet. For Gokey, Paula picked something (Dance Little Sister?) by Terence Trent D'arby. Randy picked Apologize by One Republic for Kris. No firm word yet on Simon's pick for Adam. Rumors of U2's One, but nothing for sure last I checked.

It's very odd that I've never watched AI before this year, but after Liss posted the Mad World video I've become obsessive. Go Adam!

I don't know where the people subjected to GGW and other objectionable commercial live, but that would suck. I haven't seen any of those commercials in SW Ohio. Maybe it's the cable broadcaster and not the show itself.

Where I work, this whole dynamic has some lovely racist/xenophobic undertones. The VeryLargeMultiNationalConglomerate (tm) has IT help desks in Cork, Mumbai, Istanbul, and Manila. Some of our customers and our employees just can't deal with it. Yes, sometimes, I have to enunciate more clearly on the phone, but sometimes I've been asked to repeat myself to <gasp> American phone workers, too.

As a corporate quality improvement manager, I keep saying - it's not the people, it's the process. Most of the workers on our various help desks are at least as educated as any of the NA upper management team. And how well do any of those worthies speak Tagalog, Hindi, Hokkien, Marathi, etc.? And it's the upper management team who want the savings of going offshore, but everyone offshore needs to speak "just like them." I'm on the diversity council, so as an employee of a global company, I don't appreciate being asked for ways to bypass those difficult foreigners. We get the same service we offer our clients, and you know what? It's pretty great.

I love to have some effective laser treatment for my rosacea. My overall skin is about as pasty pale as can be, but my face looks like a giant beet. If there were something that could fix that, it'd be done in a heartbeat. The past treatments just haven't worked well enough for the cost. Lots of cover makeup instead.

Lasik! Oh, how I'd love to be able to see. People don't believe me about the strength of my prescription. What's the lowest line you can read on an eye chart? Um, there is no eye chart. Nada, zip, zilch. I know there's an E on the top line, but without correction, it's just not there. Between that and astigmatism, I've been told I'm not a good candidate.

Oh gods! TheFatLadySings, I am so sorry. It hasn't been my personal experience yet, but my sister's gone through that with 2 dogs - one with osteosarcoma and one with dilated cardiomyopathy. Both dogs were under 2 years old. It sucks. Let me say it again, I am so, so sorry for your loss.

The dogs themselves were the biggest extravagance. Both came from a the same breeder of miniature schnauzers. My family is somewhat limited with dogs (and cats are a no-no) since dad and sister are allergic to most breeds that shed. Although as the dogs get older, teeth cleaning for them is getting pretty pricey.

Oddjob, you are correct, Mika is Zbigniew's daughter. Mike lived in the suite next to mine in college one year, and I saw the man once. Of course, I didn't have the guts to introduce myself or anything like that.

I'm fine- just far more sore for far longer than expected. This big yellow foam ring is going to be the hit of my family celebrations! My key job right now is keeping it from becoming a dog toy when it's not in use. The schnauzers just don't understand.

I fell down my stairs last Tuesday and managed to hit my tailbone on each and every individual hardwood stair on the way down. It seems I should bounce better. I'm now the proud owner of a foam donut pillow. Can anything make a better gift? I don't think so.

I watched it with the sound off and am guessing that it is far less painful that way. I've just got this thing for Scotties, well most terriers really. Which is a good thing, since one of my Schnauzers is trying to help type this comment.

I lit candles for the people in Mumbai earlier, and will keep them burning. Yeah, I'm sorta woo-woo on that shit. Damn, f'ing damn. In the name of the goddess, why!?

My company does IT outsourcing, so we work with lots of people at our help desk in Mumbai regularly. I'm scared for all of them, even though it's a very small percent of the population.
