One thing that also helps me is cutting out the distraction. Who cares if you don't go to all the cool kid parties or outings. Sometimes you just need to turn off Twitter and focus. I also like to exercise in a group--going on a bike ride with friends not only reinvigorates you and keeps your body/mind healthy but it's social.

Re: Best Bug Ever

Wow, I must be doing something wrong. I mean, starting the process (brainstorming and prototyping) 2 weeks before the deadline does not show anyone that you are really serious. The selection committee is taking a risk as well and the more sure they can be about you, the better. And no, there is no way you can keep your day job if you get into Techstars. It's impossible and really counter to the point of Techstars. However, if being an entrepreneur and building something that solves a problem really sparks your interest, there are lots of ways to continue down this path, including applying again next year. Good luck, whatever you decide to do moving forward!

Re: How gaming came back into my life

I had a great time, too! Our web site URL is http://www.gnipcentral.com which is probably why you are seeing a flat line in web site traffic.

Second, our product offering is not a web-based destination, it is an API based service that facilitates data portability so that developers can create applications on any platform they choose. I'm not even sure using a comparator like compete.com is appropriate for us in this case.

What you are likely going to see are services that you know and love using Gnip under the covers, whether that fact is transparent or not, it will certainly make measuring our popularity under these standards a bit more difficult. I'm pretty excited about what we've got going on, and even more excited about some of the ways developers are using our service to create feature-rich applications.

Cheers!

Re: louisgray.com: Posty Author's Guide to Unfollow Uninteresting Twitterers

Nice post! I have been trying to figure out how to manage my growing list as well.

As a programmer, I find that there are certain times of the day that I can't be interrupted with any incoming data, and other times where I am very much a multitasker, checking into my stream every few minutes.

One trick I've used to manage the volume is to send my BFFs to SMS. I also add a few "guests" to this list. I follow a stranger or "guest" for a period of time in order to "get to know them" and their patterns, which is where the personality starts to shine through. This way, I can see the filtered list on my iPhone when I have a break in the day.

Hmm, that filtering ability sounds like it could be a really cool mashup, come to think of it...wonder if any exist...

Re: Hollywood, Drugs & MLM: the Shadow Side of Startup Culture

Wow, that was a very well-written post and I can definitely see a lot of that. But, I would argue that you get posers in any kind of crowd you're in. I think what makes it sad is that we expect this kind of stuff in the culture at large (recalling making social notes while watching "The Apprentice"), but not amongst the nerds who spent their lives growing up and being made fun. These nerds have now come to use the very same tools of the oppressor (If I can inject some of my grad school wisdom here).

I have to say one of the most icky moments of my career in tech was when I got an exclusive ticket to a party from a friend (not the party host) and I was with a group of 5. I hope I never have to deal with that again, but I also feel lucky that when things get to socialitey for me, I can retreat back to my sanctuary of writing code.

All in all, things tend to even out. If you want to try to live the fast life, you can and you may actually get somewhere, but for the most part, the folks that have a substance-less interior are not fooling anyone. But it doesn't mean they can't be useful for something--keeping folks distracting while the rest of us do the real work.

Re: Best LittleCo of 2008 & Most Promising for 2009

I was a very early adopter of Bright Kite and I've really enjoyed seeing it grow.
