MY workouts have been happening on schedule, and my food intake is pretty good. I average around 1650cals a day when I should be hitting 2200 or so and my protein is low while my fat is about 25g a day too high - which sucks :)

Every workout I take video of every rep set result, so I am doing a pretty little montage and generally bringing folks up to speed. In general I have been too busy DOING it to spend much tiem her blogging about it. But that's all in process :)

Re: Still more safeword stuff…

Thanks for your comments and for your attention all this time :)

Re: Still more safeword stuff…

I think thats awesome. I find Obama's image to be dramatically more at odds with his reality than most of them. I think his team have done a truly masterful job of spin and framing with him. This may be a side effect of how thin Obama's record really is... there is a lot more room to play in the margins with Obama than it is with McCain or even Palin. I think they are using that flexibility wonderfully.

Obviously every politicians public image is a crafted fiction but it would be wrong to think it all comes out in the wash. Some politicians are more fictitious than most.

Re: I’ve been framed!

For any candidate, It's pretty easy to make two columns, positive and negative, of roughly equal length. It just depends on who is contributing to the lists. The problem is many of those in one column are just as subjective as those in the other - for example I disagree with 3 of the points you offer as incontrovertible evidence of discrepancy between Obama's career and his image.

That's not to say that the image is not manufactured, because all political images are, just like McCain's Maverick and Bush's Compassionate Conservative. But its also disingenuous to say that they are totally without merit. They are not created in a vacuum- they are borne out of at least semi-truths and the intentions of the supporters on which their momentum is built.

Re: I’ve been framed!

@rexm - I fully agree that there is attraction to the concepts of "hope" and "change". In fact if we look at McCain supporters we see that most of them too are looking for a change in direction adn have definite hopes for what they want to see accomplished.

Disregarding the hardcore fringe on either side who haven't used their brains in a few decades I don't consider most of the electorate stupid - though if Twitter and FriendFeed are representative the vast majority of mainstream Obama supporters do. I don't think folks have been thrown into a "frenzy" but I do think that their dreams and bias have been given the perfect empty framework to hang on. When we look at what Obama actually has done, what he has actually stood for and how he has actually acted it is astonishing to me that people will still speak of him as the harbinger of hope and change.

It is a tribute to the power of hope and the desire for change that the Obama folks have managed to frame him as it's guardian or deliverer despite the facts, despite his history.

Re: It is what it is.

Thanks jo, it is always good to hear from someone who understands. These are difficult times and the ripples effect not jsut this house but others. Hopefully growth will be the result and in the end the weakness that caused this problem can be definitevely cut out and cauterized.

Frankly it is better that it is known, despite the damange, than remain hidden. It is another to attempt to gain the emotional/personal validation of those people. There is a subtle, but critical, difference, I think.

One is lending people the ability to give us feedback, critical evaluation of our actions and attitudes, (possibly indirect) feedback of how effective we are at expressing or realizing our values, or even indications of the interactions and implications of those values. The other is allowing people to skew the priorities of those values, or even altering our value set itself.

That ties back to the example of my instructor above. For me, since technical proficiency in what he is teaching me is something I value, then I strive to change the way I do things to match what he tells me. I'm not as invested in whether or not he personally likes me, so long as we can respect each other and effectively interact.

Neither approach (feedback or approval) is objectively wrong, they're just very different; I don't think you can accept people on "both sides of the leash" if you can't accept both views as valid personal approaches. It just seems to me that if you are trying to assume power over yourself, or others, it is more effective to be more rooted in the "determining your own values" camp of thought.

Where we escape being totally cold unfeeling bastards or bitches (mostly, hopefully) is that the well-being of other people, and social interaction, are almost always amongst our values - although not always the top of the list in every case.

Tying it back to the original topic, if "earning your leathers" means someone whose rational judgment you can respect has objectively evaluated you, and thinks you are technically proficient at what you do and effective at realizing your values, then your "leathers" have value. It would be someone akin to getting a BDSM driving license. If it means you have the approval or blessing of the "old guard" as being somehow "worthy", or that your values are now sufficiently like the groupthink of everyone else, then I don't see it as having particular value any more than I care if my driving examiner likes me as a person.

Re: Earning leather…

I agree... for the most part I don't care for outside approval. However there are exceptions. For instance there are those in my life whose judgments I find valuable and insightful. How they react to somehting I am doing can easily be characterized as approval or disapproval. If they disapprove then I will re-evaluate what I am doing and why... simply because they are a useful sanity check.

Re: Money, morality and slavery…

You're more than welcome.

In the end I help people not out of a sense of pity or forced charity, but because I believe in what they are or are doing and I want them to succeed for my own reasons.

Re: Earning leather…

Thanks.
