As the publisher of Oakland Local, who was not contacted for this article, I'd add that Mr, Kopff's stated reaction to ALL comments published after the piece went up was to feel attacked, and not to listen. I suspect that this attitude, apparent in his comments, fueled the fire of disagreements.

Too bad the Trib didn't seek out more local residents to quote by name to get a more balanced view--Kopff is the only quoted person here, what's with that, Matt?

Well, they have to try to stay near a transit line to get to work and that gets tough in the relatively more affordable areas like deep east Oakland, Castro Valley, Union City...people making minimum wage can't afford a commute from Morgan Hill, for example, and wouldn't be renting a big house or a new condo there, not on one or even two incomes. Thats the core issue...as the urban city cores gentrify. the people working to serve the elite classes get pushed out to the edges where the transportation, the schools and the infrastructure are often not the quality they'd like. We saw it happen in SV when people were sleeping on couches and training in from Tracy on ACE to get to work...

Dave, thanks for writing this. The people getting pushed out can't afford Walnut Creek or Petaluma, and they don't have jobs that can pack up and go with them to those places--they are trying to stay in neighborhoods they landed in--or were born in--before SF real estate got as crazy as it is right now. It is going to require a lot more than public relations pablum to address issues like housing prices going up 56% in one year in Oakland #truefact, and people getting evicted in SF under the Ellis Act.

Jeff--Oakland Local is not anywhere near $250K in ad revenue, but as a hyperlocal non-profit we sell ads and sponsorships and seek funding for deep dive journalism, like our new police beat, helmed by former ReadWrite Web ME Abraham Hyatt. Flexibility and the ability to pivot is key--as is a lean start-up model of low overhead. Enjoyed the post!

are taking away the basic edition. I hope that you will reconsider this
business decision.

Like the others who have posted here, I am
frustrated that pricing information is so difficult to find. Post it
here on your blog so everyone can find the info. You need to be
transparent about the pricing, especially when your new pricing model
impacts so many customers.

Don't pull a Netflix by fumbling
communication about your pricing. You should be transparent about your
new prices and the reason for the change in your pricing strategy.

Anyone who bothers to check bylines can see that Oakland Local publishes 3-6 original stories daily, Monday to Friday. How about you guys? How many do you run every day? And just to be clear, I am one of the founders.

As for your slap on OL and our "constant" grants, you're probably referencing the program grants we receive that have funded training programs in storytelling and using social media and developing better acess to Drupal sites for people using feature phones, but why let journalistic accuracy stand in the way of being one of those petty reporters who like to fling slurs around just to show they can. I mean, that's not you, right?
