This year, September 11 officially becomes a National Day of Service and Remembrance under a new law signed by President Barack Obama in April. Our nonprofit organization, MyGoodDeed.org, is responsible for helping to organize this important historical observance.

And we hope you'll participate! Today we've launched a brand new Web site, 911dayofservice.org, and are releasing it first to our friends and supporters. That's you! Please take a moment right now to visit the site. Here's what you'll be able to do:

* Share. Join others in posting your pledge to perform at least one good deed or post a service plan for 9/11. You can also read and comment on the plans posted by others.
* Spread the Word. Help us spread the word by downloading and posting our Widget on your Web site, Facebook page or blog, allowing others to post their good deeds for 9/11 through you. It is a great way for you to build traffic! You also can follow us on Twitter @ 911dayofservice, and visit our "9/11 National Day of Service" fan page on Facebook and become a fan.
* Search. Explore things to do, find volunteer opportunities in your community, browse causes of interest, and review our list of 100 simple and easy things to do.
* Recruit. If you're a nonprofit, register your project in our national AllForGood data base, helping you promote your project and recruit potential volunteers.
* Donate. Support our plans to organize the largest day of service in U.S. history on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 (2011) by making a tax-deductible donation of just $9.11 to our nonprofit effort.
* Learn. Gather more information about 9/11, including lesson plans, photos, videos, and service learning toolkits.

Personally, I think 9/11 should be a day to memorialize and honor the first responders - the police, firefighters, EMTs, etc - who put their lives on the line for us that day, and who continue to do so on a daily basis. Doing service ourselves seems to me to be a fine way to do that.

I suppose you'd rather have the day used for hyperpatriotic military parades and displays of the latest weaponry, with captive Muslims being carted through the streets in cages...?

And while we're discussing the subject - I do hope we get rid of that absurd "Patriots Day" moniker for 9/11. We already have one, it's the day they run the Boston Marathon.

But seriously: I hope that between Barr and Paul a large portion of the diaffected True Believers will be encouraged to bolt the GOP. For that matter, Huckabee oughta lead an evangelical exodus as well -- leave the GOP to the plutocrats, and take away their footsoldiers. Lovely.

All the conservative commentators who have been carping about Mccain's lack of ideological purity oughta be encouraged to follow Mr. Barr with all speed.

The breakup of the Republican Party into two or three smaller parties is a necessary precondition to the repair of our system of governance. (Ditto the Democrats, btw.)
