This is a known issue and is being address, although slowly. Chinese are increasingly becoming independent travelers (as apposed to Group travel) so tours, hotels and air carries may need to look at their language and food options to meet this specific group (much like what was done for the Japanese travelers).

On the destination marketing side, we are seeing almost every Country in the world wanting to attract Chinese tourists so marketing Hawaii as destination needs to have a clear message; highlightly the unique values of this spot. The sun, surf and sea message is not unique and will be lost to Bali, Phuket and Sanya; destinations all offering similar messages. I would suggest culture, history and environment (a little like what the New Zealander's have done).

Just my 2 cents.

Dr. Mathew McDougall
CEO, Digital Jungle

Re: What is Your Social Media Personality Type? I can tell you that for many suffering this lifestyle it is hard to stop working at the levels after you have historically done this for a long while.... (and the addictive nature of work related adrenaline).

Even in the face of logic and the very real danger of long term health related issues... to slow down , rest and take a break. For me, it made me feel weak and 'out the game'.

That said, I had no choice. My Dr gave me a hand full of blood pressure tablets and I started to find I was having some other physical issues - poor sleeping, poor eating, etc etc... Therefore on advice, I started to work 9am to 2pm and after this time spent time either in the gym or taking time out to read/write.

I was fortunate to be in a position to do this but just in a few short weeks felt a pressure come off.. in fact I was able to start looking at my past behaviour in the light of someone out of control ... I just hope this new timetable can help me become more productive so when I am at work/office I can achieve more. Also, I am seeing my current schedule as someone who is fortunate rather than someone not cutting it in corporate China.

Re: Report: Twitter’s most active country is China (where it is blocked) [Updated]

Josh, Thanks for your post and taking the time to get some secondary data sources to support/or not the GlobalWebIndex report. Makes a positive change to get this level of due diligence in a blog post (so big thanks).

My Agency, Digital Jungle is working with a very wide range of social media platforms in many markets around the world so have developed some deep insights about usage/demographics in China (and Western Markets).

Although I would need to dig through our data too validate this I am not seeing evidence that Twitter is leading the world in usage. I would be interested in knowing if others working with Twitter in China are seeing trends in their data to support this assertion or not.

Re: 5 Tips for Using the New LinkedIn Company Pages

Thanks for the post. I have been using the company pages to promote DIgital Jungle (http://www.linkedin.com/com... from a while now.

I still find them quite limiting and think much more is needed to make these functional beyond an one dimensional 'group page'.

Specifically, the statistics are only updated on the 1st of the month so any modifications being made for promoting the page take a while to be validated depended on where you are in the month. I suggest at lest daily stat updates.

Another grip is the inability to display more than one location map- should be able to do more with this.

Anyway, I would suggest every business have a company page but would say that this area is behind some other social networking platforms in terms of functionality.... looking forward to seeing this area evolve.

Cheers
Matt

Re: Location Based Social Network Services in China

Markus,
Thanks for sharing my presentation on Chinese location based services. I recently wrote a blog post on the Chinese Government using ECT (electro shock therapy) to try and combat this illness (http://www.sinotechblog.com... But in some great news for (us) Internet addicts living in China is that China’s Ministry of Health has issued a circular which asks shock treatment for Internet addiction be suspended as its safety has not been proved. Guess this is a good thing, right.

Re: New Twitter Ad System Could Be Its Cash Cow

Firstly, I am in favor of companies developing business models that can ensure their financial survival and most of us have grown accustom to ad models that give us text/banners on web pages, search result pages, IM clients and even some apps....

However, the challenge is not just the natural language processing that will parse the twits for determining the keywords but having a depth of advertising to ensure we get 'relevancy'. Further, determining intent and consumer brand message optimization.. there is not necessarily a linear relationship between a specific noun used in a 140 char tweet and the advertising content... just some thoughts and look forward the ad trials to see how they get on with solving sme of these issues...

Cheers
Matt

Re: Unveiling the New Influencers

Great post.... A couple more points to make on Cost Per Day (CPD). CPD is also accepted by website owners as it provides a more predictable revenue. Further, the 4A Agencies in China whom sell 80% or so of the Branded advertising tends to have personal that have come over from traditional advertising models (out door etc) and the CPD model has a lot of logical connections and familiarity.
Cheers
Matt

Re: Effective Presence Marketing in Social Media

Liked your piece on Social Marketing.... In terms of click-through you are indeed correct it depends on position, creative, format, surrounding content etc.... however with all these factors set at most desirable I would be extremely surprised to get a CTR above 5-7% (on a content network most networks would support the <1% CTR). In a search context, 3-5% is normal. I am working in Asia where I believe we see similar CTR's to that of north America and Europe.

Any other comments about CTR's... I am interested in know if others support my claims :)

Regards
Matt
