I had a great discussion yesterday (the kind where lips moved instead of fingers, if you can believe it) the gist of which was "if a computer can do your job, you have a bad job." Not exactly in line with the financial services condition, but in both cases you should be able to feel the looming obsolescence of your job role. This has been a long time coming and, as you allude, is necessary for our society to survive in the long run.

Re: Decompress and extract a tgz or tar.gz archive in a single step

Oh, yeah, I'll admit that command is easier, although back in 2003 it only seemed to work in some linux distros. I was using Solaris (probably 7 at the time) and that tar didn't have that cool option. I don't have a Solaris box handy now, but I would be surprised if that hadn't crept its way in yet.

Should be noted that 'j' in place of 'z' in your command will extract a bz2 archived tar file. J. Really. In my Leopard install, .bash_profile is used. I don't have a Tiger (version 10.4) installation around to check, but I suspect this may have changed in Leopard. I have both files in my home directory, but I checked and only .bash_profile is used when a shell starts.

It isn't a problem if the file doesn't exist. You can create the file in your home directory and it will work. To make sure that it is working, you can place a temporary echo command in the file, something like:

echo "running .bash_profile!"

When you run the Terminal app to start a shell, you should see that text printed out.

Re: Find a File by Name in UNIX, Solaris, or Linux

Yeah, totally.
