They have a "Developer & Personal Use plans are offered in blocks of requests that may be added to at any time. These plans may be used for development, testing, and non-commercial, personal use." starting at $60 for 1,000 requests... They do list a Pioneer Grant program: 'Some grants are available for startups and other developers to experiment with the Wolfram|Alpha API.' I realize if you're serious then the signup cost is minimal, and not out of the ordinary, but I wonder if this will hurt them more than help them.

Llocation aware WolframAlpha queries might be interesting? Something like http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=current+ge... isn't all that inspired, but if it could take that data and offer pre-canned queries about that location it would be interesting.

Queries like:

Conversions to local units: http://www.wolframalpha.com/examples/UnitsMeasu...
Sunrise/sunset times: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=what+is+th...

And on and on...
Tides for the area: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=tides+Bost...

Re: MG Blue Trees - Friends cottage :: seems Artless

Thanks for the comment, Ed. The book is really full of references, though, so I suspect it will take me a while to get links for all of it, but each one is interesting. Thanks for the link back!

Re: Google Earth KML file for the photographs on my photoblog | Whole Map

Peter, you're correct - pblog.php generates the XML file with all the geocoded content. You can certainly use the <network link> to point to a static XML file on a server, then only refresh that file as necessary. Another option, though, is to see if you already have automatic caching going on on your server - most big sites already do this, so you might be able to get this for 'free'... If you know your geodata won't be changing very often then you'd want to set a much longer <refreshInterval> value so that the clients aren't pinging your server unnecessarily.

Re: Bruce Trail hikes | Whole Map

thanks!

Re: Bruce Trail hikes | Whole Map

Unfortunately I have to experience with overnight camping on the Bruce Trail. I imagine the farther south you are, the tougher it would be to find campsites. They really shouldn't have let the Twitter name Squatting go on so long. What are they going to do with all those reserved names that have lots of people following them but 0 updates? Like http://twitter.com/computer

Might be a good way to raise money for charity? I found out about Escalate in a similar way... took their photo during a Kensington Car Free day http://www.seemsartless.com/index.php?pic=701 , didn't know who they were until I saw a similar photo on Flickr with a link to their CD.

Re: Why is Bell Canada returning a fake web browser 404 error?

A good question. Certainly many (most?) ISPs offer the URL suggestion 'service', but I'm not sure if they have an 'opt-out' option, and if so, if they try and spoof browser 404 error messages.

Re: Bruce Trail hikes | Whole Map

Margaret, thanks for the comment. I've never managed to get that far north on the trail, but it is too bad to hear that that marking wasn't great at all.
