You are correct, of course. We should also have mentioned The Hound of the Baskervilles, in which "Murphy, a gipsy horse-dealer" had been on the moor at the time of Sir Charles' death. And Dr. Mortimer, when asked about the initials 'L.L.' replied: "There are a few gipsies and labouring folk for whom I can’t answer, but among the farmers or gentry there is no one whose initials are those." Oh, and also Vincent Spaulding in "The Red-Headed League," whose explanation for his pierced ears were that "a gipsy had done it for him when he was a lad.”

Count that as our error for not searching for "gipsies" instead of "gypsies."

I think most of Doyle's positions on things are, like Sherlock Holmes, firmly planted in the era in which they sprouted. They certainly didn't age well, but considering how much of his material did manage to retain a sense of timelessness, the other stuff gets overlooked.

We did have a conversation about race in Episode 162 of Trifles, which you might find worth listening to. And in Episode 193 of IHOSE, we spoke with Mark Jones from the Doings of Doyle podcast, in which we touched on some of the inconsistencies in Doyle's beliefs. You might also be interested in our conversation with Christopher Sandford in Episode 176 , when we specifically addressed the spiritualism angle.

And just so you know this isn't a recent thing, we can go all the way back to 2006 for this entry: The Strange Friendship of Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini .

That's a good one. And it ties in with the real-life tragedy of the Mary Celeste , a ship that was found battered but intact with the captain, his family, his crew, and the lifeboat missing.

Sophia-Matilda Briggs was the daughter of Benjamin Briggs, captain of the Mary Celeste.
