He only uses IE, even though Firefox is installed and used by the rest of the family. He said that he trusted the browser because it was from Google, a company that he trusts, so he decided to try it. He was happy that the browser was very simple, because he mostly uses the internet to browse for news or search craigslist.

These are the people who are switching from IE to Chrome.

Re: My Plans for a New RSS Reader

Interesting point on sharing. I like how Google Reader handles sharing, and would probably emulate something similar, unless I discover a superior way to handle it.

Allowing user configuration of the RSS reader would be interesting, but I'm not sure how much work it would take to implement.

Also, do you happen to have the source code from your project? While I will not be implementing my backend in Java, I like to see how other people approach a problem that I am working on.

Re: My Plans for a New RSS Reader

I came to this same decision with a couple of my friends at the beginning of this summer, but unfortunately our situation got complicated and our project was abandoned. We had used PHP for the front end, and Java for the backend (downloading and parsing the feeds, as well as a couple other intensive processes).

The main thought that drove our project is that the internet, and all of the blogs and comments and everything else is all conversation between people, and the RSS reader should reflect that.

Sharing is a feature I feel no RSS reader has done properly, so make sure you spend time contemplating how you want to handle that.

As you plan to experiment with many different UI's maybe you should consider creating an engine for allowing personal configuration of the UI?

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this type of project already, so feel free to bounce any ideas you have off me, I'd be glad to help.

Re: louisgray.com: The Gray Family Doubles Overnight. I'm not wary of new users, in fact I welcome them openly, but I will immediately judge them based on what they say.

I use anonymity in two main cases. Either I don't want something written by me to be easily traced back to me, or I'm saying something trivial and it's easier to remain anonymous.

I too started writing in my blog anonymously, but quickly decided that it didn't provide me any benefits, since anything I write there is not trivial (IMHO) and is something I wouldn't mind being in search results for my name.

When someone reveals their identity online the associated content is usually higher quality, because you can much easier be held responsible for what you say. So, being anonymous isn't a bad thing, but I don't see what benefit it provides if you are producing well written and thoughtful content. And so far, from what I've read, you're doing a good job at it.

Re: RSS Reset Update

Thanks, Ryan! I got to install Ubuntu on my Mom's laptop last week, and even she found it fairly easy to use. I ran into some problems getting flash working on one specific site (pogo.com) for her, and due to that she wanted to switch back to Windows XP :(

Re: 13 things I would work on to make Pandora better

No problem Lucia, I only hope you can continue to make the service better. Did you try to set up FeedBurner for your site? If so, maybe the url you entered in that text box is incorrect. If that's the case, try clearing the box and seeing if the original feed from Blogger gets updated. If that's not the problem, try opening up the actual rss or atom file in an editor, and see if the content from your more recent posts are in there, at least that way you can figure out if the problem lays with Blogger or your feed reader.

Re: Google Reader allows me to (surreptitiously) alter the text of any article.

Thanks for pointing out the duplicates problem, it goes well with what I found. If you add a note to a shared item, you can modify the original post however you want, and that is what get published in your Shared Items the second time(it just usually happens to be the same).

I've also noticed that OPML import problem with Shyftr, it only took in about 10% of my feeds, however, I just tried importing into Bloglines, and it picked up all of my feeds, which makes me think the problem is likely with Shyftr.

Re: Google Reader allows me to (surreptitiously) alter the text of any article.

I looked around a bit and couldn't find it easily accessible anywhere, so I uploaded today's file.

Ryan Svoboda's OPML File 5/7/2008

If you end up getting all my tags or folder structures I apologize, it's current;y very messy and I need to get around to organizing it.

Re: Google Reader Gets Notes

Ryan thanks for the kind words. I read your post yesterday. You make a great point about being able to edit the HTML of the original.

This is a big complaint of Profy as well. Right now they left you free blog the post and you can change whatever you want. This is not good and will lead to content theft.

But in David's interview over at the KnightKnetwork he questioned the Profy VP and they indicated that they intended to fix the problem. She indicated they would delineate the source more clearly.

Re: Google Reader Gets Notes

It seems like Disqus doesn't let you edit comments.

The url is the correct link, but I'll try it again

Google Reader allows me to (surreptitiously) alter the text of any article.

Re: Google Reader Gets Notes

I ran into all of the same problems/complaints as you.

However, I also noticed a new feature that can be easily abused. When you add a note to a post and share it, you are given the option to edit the html markup of the original post. When it shows up in your shared items, it gives your friends no indication of what you changed. Read about it in more detail in my post <a href=" http://duffsdevice.blogspot.com/2008/05/google-...> Google Reader allows me to (surreptitiously) alter the text of any article.

Now I'll have to go check out Profy. keep up the good work writing here.

P.S. I like the giant RSS button, I was thinking about putting one on my site too. :)
