I agree! when I saw the snapshot of the video I thought it had to be a joke. Sad to discover it was not. Yes, that is all well and good to celebrate our heritage but that was not the time or place for it. When HBCUs are having their budgets slashed they need to ask --- what are you going to do for us...

I can appreciate your experience on GoodReads and even as an editor of a paper that publishes book reviews, I am fortunate to not have that experience.

Personally, I love GoodReads but I use it differently. For me it is about discovering books and people who love books. More importantly it is about maintaining an ever growing TBR list which I will never finish (1,400+) and the dream of someday actually reading a few of those books (which I yes I do!) speaks more to my soul so I will stay. But can respect your decision to make a different choice. It is a choice - not required to prove what a brave solider someone is.

Finally, as someone who has loved social media since the good old days of "you've got mail!" and someone who works in the industry....I am deeply disturbed by the bullying that goes on daily using social media as a weapon. Your blog illustrates just another way in which people are hiding behind their computer screens/keyboards to treat each other horribly. It disturbs me the way we feel entitled to demand apologies, or as an earlier person on this thread suggested, call someone pathetic.

Everyone on this website loves words - the power they have to convey a message and tell a story - it is unfortunate sometimes people in this world forget their ability to truly hurt with words as well.

I agree with you for the most part (minus the ending). People who believe in the Bible tend to forget that Jesus never had an interest in running the world through earthly governments. Should your beliefs influence your vote, yes otherwise it means nothing to you, but there is no "perfect" choice. So while I may disagree with somethings when I look at the opposite it is really no choice.

I am a Christian and how I TRY to live my life is based on that belief system and while I do not shy away from sharing my personal beliefs, I do not sit in judgment of others.

When you work for a newspaper unless you are the publisher, every thing that you publish cannot --- and should not --- reflect how an individual (editor) feels. Said that to say that our religion editor submitted a story which we published on our website and will be in the upcoming print edition. President Obama has lost her support over this single issue. I told her that I do not expect perfection from any man, President Obama included.

For years I also became quietly peeved when gay rights was declared a civil rights issue. But when you step back from the emotions of it all --- I truly think it is. I am reminded of when as a kid I was afraid when the Klan frequently held marches in Dallas and I asked my Dad why was it allowed, he said freedom of speech. He said we might not like this but what if they had said Dr. King could not march....you gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to freedoms.

So anyway this is Sis. Tarpley's article on her belief that gay rights is NOT civil rights issue.

So I was surprised this week to learn that a known member of the KKK served on the Supreme Court - I think the fact Clarence Thomas is more conservative than Hugo Black was says a lot about him.

Clarence Thomas worse than a member of the KKK

(NNPA) As the nation eagerly awaited the Supreme Court’s decision on
the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, all eyes were focused
on Anthony M. Kennedy, a staunch conservative who occasionally supplies
the lone swing vote that tilts the court’s narrow 5-4 rulings in one
direction or the other.

But this time, to the surprise of arch-conservatives who had
championed his cause, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. sided with the
liberal bloc on the Supreme Court, giving President Obama an unexpected
clear victory in his signature legislative accomplishment.

What was not surprising was that Clarence Thomas would not step into
the role filled by Roberts. He is widely regarded as the most
conservative member of a conservative-dominated Supreme Court. Thomas is
far more conservative that Hugo Black, a former member of the Ku Klux
Klan who served on the court from 1937-1971.

Black, a former U.S. Senator from Alabama (he once filibustered an
anti-lynching bill) joined the KKK in the early 1920s. In fact, during
the 1926 election, he gave speeches at KKK meetings throughout the
state. Black later acknowledged that joining the Klan was a mistake and
became one of the most liberal members of the Supreme Court, strongly
backing the principle of “one man, one vote” and using the equal
protection clause of the 14th Amendment to forbid racial discrimination.

No such luck with Clarence Thomas.

As someone who lost my home to early demintia and heart disease, I am glad to hear about this program. Hopefully it will make the lives of the patients and their families better as they cope with this heartbreaking condition.

I was truly surprised at how misinformed I was about President Abraham Lincoln and his feelings about slavery. As a middle school student I read every book i could get my hands on about him in the library. Some of the things in this article I did not even believe until I looked them up --- which we should all do about any "history" folks try to bring to us.

Bottomline before you start praising Lincoln on Juneteenth - check this out:
