If the cycling/commuting community would take ownership to keep it clean, report maintenance issues, etc, they could work. Any word on price for these things, though? In a "cubicle farm" job, you have a mandatory performance review once a year (that most people dread doing). You, as an independent, did your own year-end performance review because you *wanted to*.
These are the things that make you awesome (and successful)!

Re: Photo of the day: Cigarette vending machine

I was surprised the other day when my younger brother (27) and I walked to the local bar for lunch. PA has no-smoking laws in place now as well, so when my brother went over to buy cigarettes from the vending machine, I thought it was kind of silly.
The bartender explained that enough people still buy them (and smoke outside) to make it worth keeping the machine there.
(and yes, it still uses pull knobs and bills/change)

Re: Photo of the day: Accommodating large parties

That's impressive! All too often, students left wash in the dryers, fell aleep, went to class, etc. Then, I was forced to remove their clothes, to use the dryers for my own laundry. All of Google's services are free, but you see AdSense ads everywhere you look. If you're not using an education-purposed WikiSpace, it has advertisements. Even Twitter, is already putting little taglines on the ends of shorter Twitter SMS messages. I figured it was only a matter of time before they started selling that space.
Honestly, I think if Twitter wanted to toss in a "sponsored advertisement" Tweet for every 25, 50, 100, whatever on my timeline, I think I'd be perfectly fine with that.

Re: Central PA Social Media Share

Is it wrong to just post my Friendfeed (thanks, btw for getting me hooked on that).
Friendfeed: http://friendfeed.com/rorowe
Twitter: http://twitter.com/rorowe
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=615347033
Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77246071%40N00/
Tumblr: http://rorowe.tumblr.com/
blog: http://cellowireless.blogspot.com

Re: FriendFeed FTW

Alright...giving it a shot. When Jaiku was bought by Google, I thought, "Maybe this is better." but even with Google's Corporate backing, it's still lacking. Pownce, same thing. Better in some ways, worse in others. Now, even Plurk is begging for attention, but as you said, it all comes down to the network. Proof to your point, I haven't even touched FriendFeed, yet continue to use Twitter and Facebook daily despite any downtimes or lost features.

Re: Would I want to be Robert Scoble?

Coming from another Twitterer near Harrisburg, I agree with you. I got into blogging when I was a freshman in college (I've deleted and restarted a number of times since then, but never "quit"). As a teacher/orchestra director, I get to see "the future" and for most of the students I come in contact with, *I* am their source of upcoming technology. No longer do we have the "geeks" watching TechTV (G4), reading SlashDot, etc. My favorite question, which only comes because students are friended to me in Facebook is, "What's Twitter?" To answer them, I pull out my cellphone (prohibited during school hours, btw), and show them. :-)
I'd rather evangelize locally, though, than have to be an internationally known voice of what's new.
