I don’t work there anymore. I run my own recruiting agency now called M|REC (Merrill Recruiting). I still recruit, but now I do it even more awesomely than before. I can help your company suck less at recruiting, too. This post is here for archival purposes, but please know I am not on their payroll any longer. Though, my wife does have access to Twitter and Facebook from her office because her company encourages it. They want employees to talk about their work (obviously only the good stuff) in an effort to make a connection with younger generations in this area.

Re: More Than Half of Employers Now Block Twitter, Facebook, MySpace

Is this news? Of course companies will restrict employees from spending as much time as possible online for less-than-professional reasons. That's why their called "companies" not "cafes".

In my experience, companies that keep their employees from peering out into the world also spend a fair amount of time with their fingers in their own ears trying to be sure nothing negative gets in, either. All that truth gets in the way of navel-gazing.

Say it with me: "la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la. I can't hear you."

If anything else, I heard a rumor that Facebook, MySpace and Twitter work on those newfangled cellular telephones now, too? If "driving sales" is what you want, and you can only choose one or the other, consider the latter. This other stuff is really awareness and marketing. It generates awareness and that can engender trust, and trust results in sales.

Re: My APX Story

Any business model that relies on "Well, you signed the contract, fork it over" isn't a business, it's a lie.

If my legal contract required payment for services that didn't work, and allowed me to still demand payment even if it didn't work, I would revise my contract or my services.

If other APX clients are happy, that's awesome. Nobody wants to admit that, if you step back and look at it, this issue was decided by *people*--on both sides.

But, it's too hard to blame "people"... people vote their opinions. People exercise their rights to freedom of speech and religion. "People" isn't scary enough.

... its easier to blame a so-called outsider religious group supposedly full of zealots and freaks, who are secretly trying to undermine people's rights and take away your freedom to be yourself.

Sounds a lot like the final battle-cry from the McCain camp in this last election... "Don't vote for Obama! Fear, and unknown..... Ayers! Money redistribution! Boogeyman!..."

Marginalize the Mormons... it makes it so much easier to ridicule and abuse them and blame them for something they actually had very little to do with.

Re: Comments on Proposition 8, California Ban on Gay Marriage

Alright Robert--I'll concede that it's easy for me to see both sides. It sounds like you're already aware of what I would have to say and you've still made up your mind. I've moved the line on this issue because I don't feel like "separate but equal" makes sense. It is hard for me to imagine what other social changes which could occur that would further distort and subvert tradition but as you've already said: we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Time will tell where this goes.

Re: Comments on Proposition 8, California Ban on Gay Marriage

I appreciate your comment, Phil. Yes, my example was very extreme--which is why I retracted and clarified it.--but in the last week, there are others making similar ones that are just as shocking.

At the end of the day, we all need to realize that what is society's "norm" can, by definition, only be defined by said-society. Where we draw "the line" with respect to what is OK and what is not is variable and flexible and will change over time, of course. I hope both of us will reserve the right forever to defend our personal beliefs, whatever they may be, and then align with eachother when the voice of the people has been heard. Anything less would destroy us.

Yet, that doesn't mean that any of us should stop pushing for what we want to see changed.

Our nation was founded on the belief that the people should choose where that line is... the people should be in charge of where that line is... the people, the people, the people.

50 or 100 years ago, this wasn't even an issue. Today, people are calling those who supported defining marriage as "between a man and a woman" bigots and haters and extremist nazis. 100 years from now, what will the issue be?

The arguments for same-sex marriage claim people should have the right to marry whomever they choose as an act of love. I respect the desire there. I love my wife and my children. If we were not allowed to be married by law, I would still do everything in my power to try and be with them, protect and care for them. I know that the place the line has been drawn on this issue leaves a lot of people out and feeling betrayed.

These are likely good people, loving people, people who, in many ways, would likely even be better parents than me. I do ache for them that, like @ryanwillis said above, what is a religious issue has been made a political one... so that people are forced to take sides.

I have a strong feeling this is going to get uglier and uglier before it gets better, and its going to get worse for people, especially those labeled "bigots" for passing proposition 8 in california.

Consider for example, an interesting problem: If it becomes the socially-acceptable norm that a person should marry whomever they choose, both consenting, because they are in love, how soon before the line becomes more blurry. Can a woman now marry her lover as well as her husband? Can a man then have many, many wives, all of them "consenting"?

Yes, my example was extreme, but there is no denying, whatever any of our feelings of "Proposition 8" may be, we will all look back on this time as a time things changed in America.

We will all remember this election.

Re: 4 Factors Creating Utah Workforce Funk

Thanks! I also wouldn't want my civil liberties jeopardized if courts overturn laws people voted for.

However, in this particular case it seems as if the courts are not denying, but trying to extend civil liberties to a minority group in the same way civil liberties were extended to racial minorities decades ago.

Re: Comments on Proposition 8, California Ban on Gay Marriage

Sterling,

This is a good comment, and both yours, Lonnie and Charlie make me think i wasn't clear enough in what I was trying to say. I was sloppy in my writing and it appears that I am calling Gays and Lesbians the same as serial killers. That's NOT what I meant, and I am sorry for being unclear.

My problem is with the Supreme Court of California effectively making the law here. The court should not make laws. It should, as Lonnie mentioned, be able to check and balance the laws and judge their constitutionality. I realize there is grey area here, but when you compare the voice of 4 Million people to 4, it seems unfair that the court, effectively, made the law here through banishing another one.

I am not without sin, and am not trying to cast stones, but clarify parts of this story I don't think are being told. I realize it appears I did cast stones, however, because of sloppy language. I am concerned about MY civil liberties if courts are allowed to overturn any law the public had voted for. My intention was to draw an analogy, though I agree its sensational as Charlie mentions, and in the context it is being read, I see that it is offensive as all of you have said.

Re: Comments on Proposition 8, California Ban on Gay Marriage

Of course its offensve.
