Some of these kids are not influenced by it, some are. Some grow up in nice neighborhoods with big houses, excellent schools, and a great home life - but STILL end up as thugs.

This discussion about "thugs, punks, and at risk players" is not about where they come from and upbringing, but rather their character and attitude.

I work in higher ed and see kids all the time who have come from bad homes, bad schools, and bad communities that do nothing to encourage or help their kids. Some of them are the brightest, most motivated kids I work with. Some are pretentious little pains in the ass. I see the same thing from the well off kids, so it is not about whether they are from the rough parts of town, or from broken homes. It is about their attitude, and their willingness to play by the rules and not engage in activities that hurt their team or the university. Character kids may not win as many games for you, but you at least have a team dedicated to upholding the university traditions and winning the right way.

Sampson and Co. did not look at the CHARACTER of the kids they were recruiting. they saw a skill set and name, and that's it. So long as they were beating folks, it didn't matter how. Sampson looked at NCAA compliance the same way, and you see how bad that went down.

Bottom line is that walking a mile in their shoes is BS, Mike. These were kids that NEVER should have been wearing the Cream and Crimson. I am not saying some kids don't need a chance. I am saying that if we get kids with GOOD CHARACTER, their upbringing and background is irrelevant.

Re: In the clear: NCAA accepts IU’s self-imposed penalties

I have to say this is the best case result. I was worried we'd lose more scholarships and a one year post season ban. I am glad IU stepped up to the plate and imposed the self-sanctions last year to curb a possible smite from the NCAA. I guess all the money we threw at Ice Miller payed off.

Now, lets throw our support behind the new Hoosiers.

BEAT ST. You defended Sammy Sosa and his corked bat. Not too different than UK fans defending Gillispie.

Re: Is Bawa Muniru the final piece to the 2009 puzzle?

I was really expecting someone to make a crack about the four brothers and the four white girls... Even if he rode the bench and contributed in practices it woull have looked good. SVT is a good player, but like BoobyDigital I don't think just anyone gets to play at IU. That being said, I am not convinced Jobe deserves to be in an IU uniform, but he's at least got the SIZE.

On another note, Jamar Smith is going to the University of Southern Indiana (Bruce Pearl countrry)... my alma mater. I have mixed feelings... USI has been known for giving 2nd chances to D1 college guys who have missteps. It breaks my heart this guy is coming to USI but I guess everyone deserves a second chance, even former Illini alcoholics who can't stay on the road or stick to their probation. I heard he is working at the grocery store down the street... I may have to go check that out.

Re: Inside the Hall turns one year young

Fellas, great job. Coach Knight was attending his 8th grade basketball games and proclaiming him the best basketball player ever in the state... in the 8th grade. So that would be NINE YEARS OF HYPE if you count his college career. EJ's one year fizzle and burn is not even close.

Re: The Aftermath: Eric Gordon

I think with good coaching Gordon will have a good chance of being successful in the NBA. He has tremendous potential that is for sure, and I see him going in the mid-late first round.

I seriously wonder if Sampson/Dakich didn't coach the kid as hard as the others because they knew Gordon would be one and done, and they knoew even with no coaching he'd put up 20 points a night and they were cool with that. He definitely had the green light from the coaching staff to chuck it up from anywhere and drive wildly in the lane. Any other player doing that would be lashed severely for it! Could you see Taber swooshing through the lane each time he touched the ball? He'd be BENCHED for even hinting at it!

Re: The Morning After: Tom Crean

All at once everyone exhale...... I like him maybe a little more than Bennett because his defensive coaching and ability to win games will endear to the IU fan base. Yes, he has that Big East "slickness", but that may be just what we need to get recruits to B-TOWN.

Re: ITH Super Happy Fun Time Coaching Search: Tom Crean

Thanks for the tip, Big A. I think we may have a legit shot at a coach like Tony Bennett or Mark Brownell. We as fans like to throw around names like Pearl, Crean, Izzo, and Few. But, the truth is Indiana needs a fresh face who can come in and not be haunted by past transgressions or failed expectations.

Also, this website is quickly becoming one of my faves, you guys at ITH do a great job.... keep up the stellar work!

Re: A drop in the cap for Bruce Pearl

The two longest sentences... ever.

Re: A drop in the cap for Bruce Pearl

Pearl is the man. I live in Evansville and went to USI during the time Pearl was there. Like Pat Forde said he was a beloved individual. I would be surprised if he ends up at IU, largely because of the money he would demand as well as a possible buyout from Tennessee. I would love to see BP in Bloomington, but I think trying to grab a young up and comer (like Tennessee did with Pearl) would be the better choice.

It makes me proud that Pearl coached at my alma mater... when people ask where I went to school, I can always say where BP started out coaching, then they usually get it.
