And I'm happy to hear you have techniques in place to correct them on the cloud backups. Given that my data is continually backed up to your servers and newer versions of my files overwrite the older versions, could you help me understand if ongoing, undetected bit flip errors on my side of things will be corrected on your end, or if the newer, bit-rotted files may simply end up replacing the older, intact versions of the files? Furthermore, if I don't detect the bit rot in time, for whatever reason, and the cut-off time is reached for a backup version (I think yours is six months, right?), does that file become unrecoverable?

Re: Jay & Kai Train at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym

Loved it! I know Americans aren't big on disciplining their pets, but a little spray bottle with water inside does wonders... Get him outside your bedroom, keep him there so you can rest, and if he scratches the door, open it and spray him. You may need to repeat that treatment over the course of several days, but he will finally learn that scratching the door or making noise outside the bedroom will earn him a spritz of water, and he'll stop doing it. And you'll need to make the effort to get out of bed and spray him, so you'll be more tired for a few days, but it'll pay off in the long run.

Re: Cat is Robbing Me of My Beauty Sleep

You could let him outside at night... All our cats stay in the yard, and they sleep in a cathouse I built for them, or where they like, like in the cellar. They get to spend a little time each day in the house, and as soon as they misbehave or get too restless, they go out. What you're seeing with your tomcat is normal. Cats have different sleep cycles than humans, they prefer to be active at night, particularly during the warmer times of the year.

Re: In which US Airways ruins a night of an otherwise awesome vacation - Benjamin Golub

They probably wouldn't treat a Premier member badly, but they definitely step all over their occasional customers, like me.

Re: In which US Airways ruins a night of an otherwise awesome vacation - Benjamin Golub

I've had good experiences with US Airways, and I've been flying with them, on and off, since my college days in the mid-90s. I'm surprised they did this to you. On the other hand, I've had terrible experiences with United, so my advice is to stay away from them.

Re: Data Storage – not just a shot in the dark

Have you tried copying the data to an external drive and shipping it off to your parents or to a good friend? It's a cheap way to get offsite backup. Sure, the data set won't be up to date, but you can buy another drive, and when you're about to visit your parents/friends, you copy your data to that new drive and swap it with your old drive.

I tried these companies that offer you unlimited backup, but there's always a catch, whether it's in a bandwidth cap, so it takes forever to upload the data, or in the restore process, which isn't a complete set of the data you lost, etc. Be careful with that.

There's also another piece of software that you buy (so you own it), and once it's installed on two computers that are geographically separated, it'll let you initiate a backup session from one to the other, which means that you could back up your data on your parents' computer and vice versa. I forgot the name of it, sorry. Wish I could remember it now, because I'd like to try it myself.

Re: The Web’s Dirty Little Secret

You hit the nail on the head with this one, Steve.
