Thanks for sharing this great lineup up of some of the larger brands that are taking advantage of Twitter and I am glad to that you were able to interview some of the people behind them because they are ALL leaders who should be recognized for pushing their companies into the conversation. And it's always good to learn more about the people behind the scenes.

Hello, sorry for posting late but I found this post after trying to use "ShareThis" on my Tumblog. I had the same issue : submitting the homepage.

But I found out what to do :

1) Copy and paste the code given on the ShareThis website when you are logged in.

Example : <script type="text/javascript" src="http://w.sharethis.com/widget/?tabs=web%2Cpost%2Cemail&charset=utf-8&style=rotate&publisher=XXX"></script> (I removed the publisher info, given with your account)

You must paste this between the {head} and {/head} tags.

2) For each "block" section (text, video, audio...) you have to incorporate a specific script, exactly like this :

<script type="text/javascript">SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "{PostTitle}", url: "{Permalink}", });</script>

Everything should be OK : the button appears at the bottom of every article and ties to the correct permalink addresses. It also uses the titles of the posts.

But there is possibly one issue : the text given as a small summary is taken automatically by ShareThis. In some cases, when using a basic layout, it correctly detects the 1st § of every article.

But on some other cases (guess what : like mine ^^) when using a complicated 3 colums layout, ShareThis was ALWAYS using the "about" section text. Basically all I had to do is to reduce the size of my little introduction, in order to make it too short to be selected by ShareThis.

I hope it can help other Tumblr users : we can say that ShareThis can work nicely in most cases, but the "summary" problem is a random issue.

Last issue, really annoying : ShareThis does not work with Internet Explorer 7 on my site. Don't know why ! With Firefox everything is OK.

It is certainly time consuming but I am also an extreme case, I sign up for almost every new social media/network service that launches. But I also work in social media so it doesn't take as much time away from family, friends and other personal obligations as you would think.

For me it's important to have a presence everywhere but you need to prioritize so choose a few of them make sense for what your goals are so, for me it’s: Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, and Digg. Other services, use more sporadically when it's relevant or when you get a notification. For example if I am traveling, I will use Dopplr and TripIt. It also helps to use a service like Ping.fm so at minimum you can keep your status updated on the different services.

I actually not able to make that work, I didn't thoroughly test that out but I am having the same issue. It's submitting the homepage and not the permalink of the content which I am trying to share. If I can figure out a solution, I will let you know otherwise I will be removing it.

Go to sharethis.com, register there for their code for "other web sites" and they provide you with the code which you then put within your blog/tumblr theme. They also provide you with reporting information.

Oh wow it's Delauren! I thought I recognized her. We worked at the same ad agency several years ago, we all thought it so cool that she had that car and now she is in NY Times! With that kind of car, of course she is awesome!

I pay for a similar set of services and I think that is about it. I do pay for email but even that I have been debating. I use Yahoo to create dummy spam email addresses (so I don't give out my real email address address).

Flickr ($25 year)
Yahoo! Mail ($20 year)
1and1 hosting ($5 month)
Skype Pro ($3 month)
Blockbuster Online ($20 month)

I recently ended my SecondLife account ($75 year). I also spend enough money with GoDaddy for renewing domain names. Besides SL, all the services I paid for bring real ultility into my life where as most other web services that I use could be considered just for fun so I don't know if I pay for example: Twitter.

Well so far it seems ok - the interface is straightforward and the comments look slightly better than the standard ones.
It will be interesting to see if it increases the amount of comments received.

I have updated my post to reference the book and both of them. Please pass my thanks to them because as a social application developer, this data is extremely helpful I have shared it with my entire team. We were already classifying our users into types but without any demographic survey data we only were looking at in one dimension.
