I have to say, it is amazing how print media can still being so behind on web content. This is an article about online content distribution provided by the library. Yet there is not a single web address (much less hyperlink) in the entire article. SEO for related content anyone?

Audiobooks have been available, but I'm pretty sure the movies and music thing is new. If not, I guess it's good they're finally getting the word out.

Maybe i'm missing something, but you've been able to check out audiobooks online from the Library for over a year or two now. Maybe the eBooks part is new. Very cool system to be sure. I think this event is just to raise awareness about the service, which is (obviously) very low.

Nice work fellas! I like it. You can just make out the laces. Good vintage feel. Very basic. I like the block numbers and lettering too. Kinda looks like some old Leafs sweaters, doesn't it?

Gee, you don't think Mr. Tennessean wants us to lay off about the convention center PR mess because, as the sole newspaper and one of only 4-6 major media outlets in the area, they were one of the main beneficiaries of all that extra PR budget, do you?

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on that. I understand that it's necessary- Heck, they already had 21 conventions booked as of a few weeks ago, and it hasn't even been fully approved yet. But I'd love to see some evidence that Metro is capable of managing the contracts in a way that doesn't land us at a cost that's six times more than what we planned.

I'm all for the new convention center. We really do need one badly. But it has to be managed better and come in somewhere remotely close to budget.

1 - I know that at least in my experience, people in my neighborhood were shooting off fireworks all night long on the 3rd/morning of the 4th. I was at a friend's house in East Nashville and they were making jokes along the lines of "at least we know it's fireworks tonight and not gunshots." Due to the timing it's possible that they were heard but assumed to be fireworks.

2 & 3 - No idea other than the details that have already been released... to point #3 they have repeatedly said that McNair was not found to be in violation of the law and was allowed to leave, with not much else explained. I'm not sure if he was omitted from the original report or if that information was just not conveyed to the press until later in the investigation.

A few things i find weird (though no conspiracy theories here):
1) there were apparently at least 3 gunshots fired in the wee hours of the morning on a holiday weekend in an apartment complex downtown and no one called anything in to the police? Dozens of people had to have heard the shots

2) Along those lines, why did the dude that found the bodies call a common friend first, rather than the police or anyone else?

3) Is it not normally policy for the police to record the names of passengers in a DUI case? Why did they omit McNair from the original report and just let him take a cab home?

Ditto in Texas where i grew up. Still no follow-up classes or tests that i think should be there too. But at least make sure they were told how to drive at some point in their life!

It is pretty amazing. In Virginia, driver's ed was mandatory for anyone under 19 being issued a license. We didn't have a driving test beyond driver's ed, though.

I am still blown away by the fact that TN doesnt require driver's ed to get a license. Even though i know there would be janky "Safe Auto" style 'legal for less' classes that would crop up, most kids would probably go ahead and take the real class when they turn 15 like every other state out there.

Boggles the mind that you have to pass one test when you are 16 yrs old that may or may not even require you to make a left hand turn or parallel park (based on personal and 1st hand accounts from friends) - and you get to operate a lethal piece of heavy machinery for the next...80, 90 years...however long you want. No further certification, education, or testing needed.

Agreed.

The major one that is needed - but will never happen - is fixing access in and out of Green Hills. Never happen because it would mean a bunch of rich people having to move or shrink their front yards. Doesn't this look awesome.

Chalk it up to the same wish list as the power line project.

Yeah, it's pretty lame. Opponents have also pointed out that it's already covered under another bill. From NJ.com:

"Opponents argue that law enforcement may not be able to tell whether drivers are texting or dialing and that texting is already covered under the state's distracted driving law.

'It's redundant,' said Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis, who voted against the proposal. 'It's already against the law.'

As for enforcing the measure, Tracy said he's talked to law enforcement officials who say they're able to determine that someone is texting because of the lengthy amount of time a person spends looking down in his or her vehicle while driving, Tracy said.'

There's the summary. Doesn't look like they're going after anything other than SMS messages as far as I can tell.

"AMENDMENT #1 clarifies that this offense only applies to a person driving a motor vehicle that is in motion at the time a written message from a mobile telephone or hand held personal digital assistant (PDA) is transmitted or read by the person."

I find it odd that the bill will make it illegal to READ text messages too. I'd like to actually read the bill. Does it make it illegal to read any content on my phone while driving (email? web?) or just SMS text messages. By further extension: does it make it illegal to also read anything else (newspaper, books, mail, etc). I've seen many people reading other things in traffic (though fewer newspapers these days...)

Not that i think it's a good idea to do any of those things. Just curious what the bill specifies.

Haha, I know. We've been holding out for an actual logo to put on Flickr and Facebook, but it's taken us a while to get around to it. Once we do our redesign and relaunch next month, I *promise* we'll get rid of all the blank icons!
