McCain has been playing the "association game" with Obama and Ayers all week. At the very least, the Lewis statement forces McCain to repudiate his his own "association" with supporters at McCain-Palin rallies. That's never a good place to be.

The shareholder equity is going to be worthless if the government ends up owning AIG. There is no bailout of shareholders in this case. In the after market, AIG equity is already down another 50% on news of this deal.

I think the answer is probably a major revamping of regulation. Our current system involves several federal and multiple state regulators with overlapping jurisdictions. In some cases we see competition among regulators that is not healthy. In other cases we see risk/reward incentives for financial institutions out of whack.

Unfortunately, our tangled regulatory system developed over 75 years largely due to reactions to crisis. I fear that without a major overhaul the reaction to this one will just add another layer and/or further distort incentives. Instead, a major rethinking is needed.

It's neither fun, nor easily explainable to the public, but it's going to be required. It's probably about as difficult (if not more so) as passing comprehensive health care reform considering all the players involved. Like national health care initiatives in the past, every major attempt to consolidate the financial regulatory apparatus has failed.

Unfortunately, this crisis has moved beyond just a bailout of a few financial institutions. Individuals and businesses with good credit are going to have increasing trouble trying to borrow money. The effects will ripple across the entire economy for years to come.

There is no easy solution and it certainly doesn't fit into soundbites and thirty second ads. But it will also derail anything else the candidates may want to do when they take office next year.
