All in all this was the most pleasant read I have had in a long while especially for a business book. I completely agree with your assesment that it is for everyone who wants to be a better people manager. Long live Berkun and may he write many more books! ;)

Re: DabbleDB: Brief Overview for the Joe Blow user

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for visiting. 37 signals Basecamp is similar that is true. Is Smallthought Systems just trying to be competitive to 37 Signals?

Regardless of who makes the product to have these deficiencies is just irresponsible and unethical. Aside from the potential downside in the PR department – I go on about this later on but its a bit off topic - there is just no reason to make clients pay for SSL. SSL is a business standard. It is no different than getting keys for a car e.g. Gmail, Google Talk, Skype, LinkedIn, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. SSL is not a feature, it is basic infrastructure, good business practice. Do you really want to be seen to be poorer than free webmail?

Regarding pricing, in order to be more specific I would need to know more and since you are probably not at liberty to tell me more we are at a stalemate with my assumptions unchallenged.

Anyway there are lots of ways for your product to make money and to build an ecosystem around it, but there is no excuse for putting ignorant customers at risk especially when the fallout with the Public will put your business at risk. I mean you do remember the lady that sued McDonalds successfully for spilling her own coffee right?

Stand out from 37 Signals and say we are different. We protect Joe Blow public because our community is important to us and we believe the public deserves to know with us Joe Blow is always No. 1. 37 Signals will do this and so will you eventually the only question is, who is 1st.

If you do this, the next time someone writes an article you can say right away, we are different, we protect all our customers regardless of privilage.

Just my two bits.

Re: DabbleDB: Brief Overview for the Joe Blow user

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the swift reply. I am over the in the UK so its late for me and as you may have noticed I am still making many changes to my blogs.

Regarding the Log-in yes all webmail ssl is fairly standard, but Google and Yahoo allow their users to put a s at the end of http manually and therefore make it secure. I always teach my friends, family, clients this trick - in fact I usually get told I go overboard about it. Yes you are right this isn't standard practice, but we are not really comparing your service to webmail so...

Regarding pricing I did check it and I have an image of it on my Flickr feed too. That was why I made my comments about the pricing. What I alluded to in my comment to you was that to be more specific I would have to understand who your target market was. Some if for your pricing

If you said it was pensioners I would say make it free. If it was geeks then I would say annual fees not monthly, cheap, and lots of features but hold the nice professional fit and finish.

If you are talking mainstream businessmen who are concerned about their consulting costs then don't worry about how much you charge because they pay consultants so they got better gear than Dabble already doing the work for them. But anything is possible.

If you are talking really small business, with no consulting budget, no dedicated IT staff, then you sell them on your ease of customisation, simplicity, friendly colours (this is important so don't laugh), and templates. The pricing in this category has to immediately say hey I can save money here.

It is this last group that I assumed you were targeting and it is them that will have a coronary when they see they are paying $300 a year. Then when someone tells them about your security precautions you will never ever get them back as customers. As a matter of fact they will talk you down every chance, because not only do they feel stupid for trusting you with their data, but you put their business at risk.

I know these people, I made lots of money off them. When I spent time with them they always loved my little pep talks telling them about this or that. I can't remember how many clients I scared off webmail just from educated them SSL. Never told them what choice to make just laid out the risks. They made their own decisions.

I am sure we will get along, as there is nothing for us to not get along about, as I said, your product technically is very sound.

Just curious though, do you guys have warnings in your interface so that when your clients do something silly like create any of the following fields: SIN, Insurance No., Bank Details, Visa, Credit Card. I would guess not employing a warning regarding possible upgrade or lack of SSL would put your company at risk. Just an after-thought.

Re: Exclusive: New Yahoo! homepage

I wrote a bit about this on my blog. Get involved with a business you are passionate about because you really believe in it and that it can change the landscape. Your passion for it will result in perservance and success after which the money will fall into place.

I agree Philip it is absolutely important to realise that money is not the focus, not the objective, it is simply a result and there is no way to predict how much you will get. Technology sharing, and a strong social aspect. Should be great.

Are you coming?

Re: BlinkList, Where Are You?

Hi Napfisk,

Saw your comment on my blog about Blinklist so I thought hey a like minded individual so I naturally came to take a peak.

Anyway I agree with your position, and I hear you about lets all play along, but I don't think its naive because there is a business case here for these companies to play nice with one another.

The reason being that they are simply not mainstream and they don't have the resources to hold out forever against their larger competitors e.g. My Web, Google Bookmarks, etc. So before they can start slugging it out for single digit market shares they need to establish their markets and that means mainstream.

The only way for them to become mainstream is to integrate and scratch each others back. This is no different a situation than any other. In the end survival if done correctly will depend on ease of use, and brand but only if they create a market they can survive in first.

One last thing. Guys Web2.0 is all about the community so if you don't share and keep your data open then just how Web2.0 are you?

Sorry for turning my comment into a post kinda got carried away. ;)

Re: http://www.techwinter.com/2006/06/16/mr-bullet-proof-dan-cederholm-at-media-2006/

Hi Steve,

Thanks for that. I was just at @Media London last week and lots of people were talking about it there too. That tells me there is lots of interest and perhaps lots of potential too.

I don't want to be too confrontation but for me RSS is a means to an end. RSS will help move data more efficiently. It already does that for Winer, Scoble, Michael(techcrunch), etc. But these guys are techs so they are willing to utilise a service with rough edges the public doesn't.

So as I see we have a great protocol with amazing potential but how it is being used today is probably nothing like what it will be in 5yrs when it is truely mainstream.

Scoble makes a good point in his post about the Mac and UNIX. Today RSS is UNIX efficient but not friendly, tomorrow though RSS could be the new Mac OSX.

Only time will tell but I have faith, we have only scratched the surface of RSS's potential in my opinion.

Re: http://www.techwinter.com/2006/06/20/great-complimentary-website-analytics-from-crazy-egg/

Hi Hiten,

Thanks for taking the time to read my posts. Are you saying what I have written doesn't add up or that their product doesn't add up?

Re: Microformats just better marketing

Hi Ja,

Thanks for the detailed comment, I always appreciate hearing from uber experts.

I do recognise that this:

Starts: 7:00 pm, June 26, 2006

is technically not 'XML' and that this is more true to form:

7pm June 26
adjfskdf

But I do think that anytime you 'describe' content via xHTML you are effectively making that content(data) nearly as accessable as if it were pure XML. I see microformats as a 'bridge solution' that will as you said 'encourage others to' move towards a more XML world.

Also I checked out the site structured blogging and its got some great plugins. I currently use Microformat plugins but am not 100% happy with, so will take a look at these ones.

I hope eventually WP will integrate Microformats into the interface so that everyone can use it 'out of the box'

Cheers,
Roger

Re: Microformats just better marketing

sorry Ja,

forgot I took out any html-ish tagging from comments
event
start
7pm june 26
start
end
9pm june 26
end
event

you will just have to use your imagination ;)

Re: ‘3′ and I kiss and make up

Best phone I have ever had, ever.

The screen is crisp and clear, just on that alone makes it untouchable for me.

The MS Office compatible apps that come with it are easy to use and contain lots of the necessary features. As well the Music player and main screen are super easy to use and meet my needs handily.

Have you heard anything?
