The Democrat in me yearns for Palin 2012. The Obama landslide could be record-breaking. Because it's too important a job to hand over to a disgruntled office seeker.

And anyway, if she's Obama's Seward, she's got to know--Seward never made it any further. She does know. And I remain skeptical that running for office is something she's well-suited for. She's done her best work as an advisor, which is why I was pleased to hear she was under consideration for SoS.

It could work, sure--but when's the last time a VP got that elusive 'third term'? Bush Sr.--and that worked out great, didn't it?

I think the first female President is out there right now, working her way up the ladder. I don't think it's Hillary. I think her chance to make her mark, independently of Bill, is here and now.

Be the best SoS you can be, Hil--don't wait for something better to fall in your lap. Don't triangulate and compromise the way you did in the Senate, because you're thinking ahead to the real job. THIS is the real job. So is whether the dog sheds more or less often (ALL dogs shed).

We had a Bichon Frise (almost identical to the Havanese) and my father developed a strong allergic reaction to her dander--or rather, a chemical in the saliva that ends up in your lungs via the dander.

There is absolutely no way for us to know how allergic Malia Ann is, or whether she's allergic to all dogs or just some. All we know is that she wants a dog very badly, and that she's interested in a GoldenDoodle, which is a big rambunctious dog.

And honestly, that's more than we need to know. :)

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

Allergies are an individual thing--you can be allergic to some dogs, and not others, and some people will be more allergic to the dogs other people are less allergic too.

I'm somewhat allergic to some dogs, but not to mine, who has a short coat, and sheds a lot. I'm just saying the whole 'hypoallergenic' thing is a red herring. Either you're allergic to a given dog or not. The proof is in the smelling.

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

Sasha could ride a really big dog, but I would suspect Michelle will not be countenancing such cano-equestrian activities, even if they get a really big dog, which I tend to doubt they will.

As for the rest, honestly--do we really want a perfect person as President?

Sane, smart, grounded--this is all I've ever asked for.

Well, nothing grounds you better than a large rambunctious dog.

And you have to be smart to cope with one.

Sanity can sometimes become a little strained.

I'm sure the Obamas will be seeing "Marley and Me" in the near future.

;)

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

Saint Bernards are great family dogs--there's a lovely female at our dog run--the couple who have her are expecting their first child, and she seems to sense it, and has seemed very excited at the prospect of her own baby. I hope she lets the parents do at least some of the parenting.

I do worry that any purebred dog in the Obama White House would lead to overbreeding, and its usual disastrous effects. Frankly, if you love a particular breed, hope the Obamas DON'T choose it.

However, I've got a Shepherd Mix, which is not a specific breed, and they could not do better. Smart, trainable, but much more easygoing than purebred Shepherds. The allergy thing varies from dog to dog and person to person--there are certainly Shepherd Mixes out there Malia Ann wouldn't be allergic to.

You know, I'm not entirely sure Barack and Michelle knew what they were getting into here.

;)

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

Hey! Scotties are not girly dogs! Leave Barney alone! He never chose to be a Bush! Lots of grass. I don't think even the most finicky shelter would object to the digs. There have been a whole lot of big dogs there--also horses, goats, parrots, etc. The Lincoln White House was something of a zoo--Teddy Roosevelt's White House also had a very impressive menagerie.

In fact, the rule has been multiple large dogs at one time.

Anyway, the Havanese is a Cuban breed. That could excite all kinds of speculation. Big rambunctious mutt is definitely the way to go.

BARBARA was the one trying to choose for the girls--their father, I will just bet you, was sticking up for what they've already indicated they want. Malia Ann was the one pushing for a GoldenDoodle--hardly a small dog. Though I believe they do fit in laps. With a bit of effort.

;)

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

I really doubt the girls are lobbying for a little dog like a Havanese. Big and rambunctious and up for a tussle at any time sounds like just what most kids would want. Of course they're going to pick, and Michelle was just being diplomatic--and frankly, I think Barbara was just getting in on the new national pasttime--"Pick the Obama's dog for them!" And Barack was enjoying a little guy humor.

Havanese are lovely little dogs--my family used to have a Bichon Frise, which is almost the same thing--they do like sitting in laps a lot. For a family with growing children, that kind of dog is just not ideal. I'm not saying it can't work, but as usual, the Obama instincts are sound.

Plus, if the dog is big and rowdy enough, maybe we can have a really cool episode of The Dog Whisperer.

;)

Re: Gates Will Stay as Defense Secretary -- Political Wire

You really don't get this "Whatever's good for the country" attitude, do you?

You keep expecting us to act like Republicans--party first, country second.
