Comparing Hochul to Stalin because the MTA map left out the G train is a bit much. Also, this op-ed could have used a map itself, as it's hard to compare the two line proposals without seeing both.

Nice article. I think the Lil Nas X song is underrated here for just how much it exposed the enormous cultural chasm that exists between self-appointed country music fans and gatekeepers and everyone else. There's literally nothing about that song that isn't "country" by today's standards of country, save for the musician who made the song. They didn't want that guy in their club, plain and simple--white, heteronormative, mostly conservative fans will always have the final word--so he doesn't get to join. To Lil Nax X's credit he doesn't remotely care.

This article misses the point about this race. I have lived in this district for four years, arriving right in the middle of the Crowley-Holden fight. Also, as a former journalist, I've been researching Holden's record as the editor of Juniper Berry magazine. In my experience, Bob Holden is two things: First, he is not just a Republican, he is a devastatingly toxic Republican representing an increasingly diverse district. As managing editor of Juniper Berry magazine he allowed homophobic, racist, and Islamophobic content to get published regularly, and to my knowledge never disavowed any of it OR allowed alternate points of view to get published (beyond short letters to the editor). Second, Holden is a wildly ineffective legislator, ranking very low among his colleagues in successfully getting legislation passed. Check Ballotpedia: Holden made 3 campaign promises in 2017, and he has failed to fulfill any of them. Who cares if he turns around and runs as a Republican in November? He doesn't know how to work with others, he doesn't know how to do the job, and he needs to go. Holden seemed to most enjoy being a conservative bomb thrower, "owning the libs" and all that -- retire him from the council by voting him out, and let's give the younger, more serious Juan Ardila a chance.

Millions of people protest peacefully and lawfully for legitimate reasons and then one person does something that none of the other protesters approve of and then everybody on the right totally loses it and says they were right all along. At least the left can spell correctly when it writes a simple sign. That all said, I don't know why you're so whipped up, Breitbart fans, you've got the entire US government on your side. Where's J. Edgar Hoover, it's beginning to feel a little like 1958 in here...

It would have been really helpful if this writer had talked about other Chinese writers rather than just his own writings/novel. This essay provides no context for us to understand the kind of 'ultra-unreal' novels other Chinese novelists are writing (as self-promotion goes it's fantastic, however). Also, such a phrase "ultra-unreal" raises natural comparisons for Western readers to wonder about the 'hyper-real' novelists of the 1990s America and England as described by James Wood. So, while I was intrigued by this essay, I felt more context would have been much more helpful.

The only problem with this story is some of the information not provided in the film. I am, you see, am an unapologetic liberal. An ACLU-card-carrying, Planned-Parenthood-donating, gay-marriage supporting, union-friendly, Obama-voting liberal. And so the conclusion to this article for me is downright bizarre.

Let me explain: I organized Phil Campbells for Phil Campbell, Alabama because we Phils represented all points of view in America and around the world. We were a non-partisan effort to help other people, period. If anything, I'm with Phil represents what happens when people put political and cultural differences aside for a good cause. I remains friends with these Phils and with many of the (often conservative) residents of Phil Campbell; we have had our arguments about politics, some of them have gotten a bit feisty, but we remain friends throughout.

Frankly, I find it kind of odd that a politicized message like yours would be used to interpret this film. Because that's not the point of it at all.

This "article" actually accomplished the opposite aim of the headline. I just started scrolling impatiently, waiting for something more profound. Perhaps the space here could have been used doing something a bit more productive, such as recommending books that, you know, convey the "Unfathomable Scale of Death in the Civil War." (The Metaphysical Club by Louis Menand, for example, showed us how the horrors of the war helped usher in new ways of philosophical thinking in America; Lincoln at Gettysburg by Garry Wills showed how Lincoln used the brutality to move America toward the full emancipation of slaves. And then there are the countless books that actually describe the horrific battle scenes). I'm all for unexpected moments in contemporary art and design that force us to perceive old things in new ways, but this doesn't achieve what it attempted to do.
