"Worth it or not" can be measured in a lot of different ways. The easiest of course would be "did I make more money than if I had worked at a 'regular' company?" But even answering that question gets tricky; check out item #1 in this article: http://gigaom.com/2011/06/0...

You're right that the timing is tough to gauge. Even if Sprinklr were to go public, that won't automatically become the reference point in time. Maybe the answer is always yes and no

Re: Confessions of a social media strategist

This epiphany isn't too different from the one that many people in adverting and marketing eventually face -- minus the specific social-media angle -- which makes the light at the end of the tunnel as described here a dull fluorescent glow rather than a ray of sunshine. A common solution is to view one's work in advertising as "art"...or is that a rationalization too?

Re: Spredfast and Mass Relevance merger: What it means for marketing clouds

Good point Mike. Unfortunately I can't answer definitively because I did not get any additional details on the financials. From what I've seen, deals can be done when both parties are coming from positions of strength. However, when an exit happens, a calculation has been made about the future that doesn't look good for an entity continuing in its current state, driven by the needs of investors, company, executives, clients, and/or employees.

I've always struggled to understand how Mass Relevance continued to function as a standalone company, as its core offering was clearly a feature that would be better off integrated with a broader platform. It was a great proof of concept that gained a lot of media attention and now the idea will scale up as part of a new firm.

Re: Why We’re Quitting Social Business

The concept of social business had so much promise in the early days. Regardless of terms, I think you all are still focused on the parts that mattered since the beginning. It's a much better path than selling out in search of profit and becoming real-time marketing software vendor.

Re: Endgame: Social Business Platforms

I agree with you Jay -- not all marketing departments are created equally or operate at the same scale/budget. So many soon-to-be ex-Wildfire clients appear to be searching for replacement publishing tools rather than entire platforms. It'll take time for the market to evolve and in the meantime, the big platforms would be wise to allow clients to mix and match point solutions while integration gets sorted out behind the scenes.

Re: Is an MBA worth it?

From the way you describe the program, it sounds like he is participating in an "executive education" program. If so, those are certainly different than traditional two-year programs but my same guidance would apply -- know why you're spending the money.

To your implied point regarding outdated theory, what I've seen is that people don't know what they don't know. Tech entrepreneurs will blog about a skimming pricing strategy or Porter's Five Forces and talk like they're Prometheus sharing fire with wretched mortals.

Re: Is an MBA worth it?

A common reaction to this post has been "join a startup instead." Practical experience is the natural bookend to academic theory. The key is to not get siloed at work or trapped in an ivory tower at school.
