If I recall correctly, when you delete your FriendFeed account don't you have the option of whether or not to delete your content? So one could delete one's account and still not "tear a big hole in the search and reference utility." (Personally I prefer not to physically delete accounts I am no longer using, but for other reasons.)

I don't agree that once people have joined Friendfeed that if they decide to leave that they delete their accounts. They have added to the ecosphere and to then remove that part of the conversation is wrong.

I think Steven missed the point about exactly who should delete their accounts. A-Listers in some other realm of social media, that have for a long time parked all there services, yet ignore the conversations that take place on those posts, could leave and I'd hardly notice their absence. Users who have developed conversations around posts that gather interest tear a big hole in the search and reference utility that makes FF so valuable when all of a sudden they depart, taking hundreds or thousands of comments with them.

And now it all makes sense. SMS gets rolled up in Google Voice while GrandDialer takes one on the chin and has to drop out of the game before Google provides iPhone users with an app to take its place. And why would this concern me? I purchased the music and now I'm somehow entrusted with its provenance? How is finding my name, associated with a music track, in any way an explicit declaration that I will be the track's caretaker for the duration of my natural life?

This line, in the last paragraph, is interesting, "They [fiends and family] are looking to us to help keep them safe and show them what the best tools are or what the worst ones are and why." I'm reminded of how I introduce the tools of social media to my immediate family members. Instead of saying, "Go start a FaceBook profile or Flickr/Picasa account," I instead start them out in a closed environment within our family tree, on the genealogy site Geni.com This allows them to manage their profiles in a totally secure space while experimenting with photo tagging, video embeds, book and movie links, discussion forums, and social networking. Once adept, I encourage them to expand outside the environment and pursue larger, more anonymous services. For both seniors and less tech-savy peers, this model for integration was worked surprisingly well.

For someone like me, who works as a cabdriver, these budding technologies have enabled me to introduce myself to more prospective customers due to my monitoring of Twitter streams that mention visits to my city. If I encounter someone who needs my services, I direct them to my Drop.io page where they can access audio and video snips describing myself and my business. The real boost to my way of doing business will come when people realize they can use a service like Loopt not only to find me, relative to their pickup point, but also peruse whatever lifestreaming channels I'm associated with. To some that may seem unnecessary but to me it's a meaningful endeavor showing that I'm worth your consideration.

You would have to reshare them. Liking or commenting does not make them visible. I believe this is to protect syndication of non-original work to some extent. With apologies to Colin for promotion within a comment, I have a blog entry about it here.

I'm curious if my Imaginary Friends, The Oregonian (Portland's major newspaper) and NPR News, could be construed as FriendFeed spam. My intention is to import their Twitter stream to spark discussions about issues that are both local and global.

Give it try, Rahsheen. You know, the same can be said of Twitter after their recent acquisition of Summize. Search for items of interest or even base your searches on geographic proximity by using Twitter Local ( www.twitterlocal.net ) and then add to those Tweets. If the Twitter member isn't on FriendFeed, add them as an 'Imaginary Friend' and that way your comments, tied to their Tweet, will show up in your stream.

Your comment actually reminds me that I have not been using FF to it's fullest at all. I have let my network grow on it's own based on who I already knew. I can't believe I let that wonderful search go to waste. I have even tried finding those who share my other interests within the same small social media pool. How silly :)

I can understand your hesitation, sometimes it can seem a little cliquey. Personally, I just comment where I think it's appropriate and I can add value or awareness to the conversation.

I hear you on the issue of exacerbating the inherent problems of the echo chamber by narrowly defining who can access your posts on FriendFeed. I believe groupthink is a more acute threat than social faux pas yet I still find myself biting my tongue and not commenting on certain posts. I hate to sound needy but group acceptance plays some role in this race toward transparency. I guess my admitted reluctance leaves me a bit more opaque.

I agree with Shey; we can have both. The echo chamber effect is greatly reduced if one approaches FriendFeed with search criteria to follow in the 'Everybody' stream. If it doesn't exist, provide it. If it does exist, add to the conversation. I've come to appreciate the professionals that work in social media because they enlighten and steer conversations that others would find uninteresting or arcane. I think this holds true for any subset of public discussion. Ultimately we'll find that FriendFeed becomes a vast search engine where one seeks out information only to find affinity with at least one other individual. Isn't that adding value to the exercise.

Possibly but as it stands the tools aren't "good enough" for him/her to build that persona. They don't make sense in a broad sense and it isn't clear how a social media identity would help a plumper.

You're probably right but as of right now, I don't think the systems are in place.

I think, by default, many people are buying into social technology as they're buying into GPS/Mobile-Tech. If our reputations precede us, then location awareness creates a need for reputations that exist in the ether that we've created and nurtured for the sake of sharing with others. As an exercise in personal brand management, it's important to me that I always create a persona worthy of a good first impression. The importance of this new media persona is still little understood and even less valued. With that said, I'm sure that in the near future even the plumber down the street will bare greater transparency for the sake of capturing more attention.

I tried it and I'm really happy with the results. The first attempt failed and I received this Error message: Status: 5.0.0 (SMTP transmission failure has occurred) Diagnostic-code: smtp;550 error (500, None)

Would there be a file size limitation? I scaled down the photo and it worked like a charm.

On the second semi-successful post I added a photo and a brief, 380K, mp3 describing the photo. The photo showed up instantaneously but no audio enclosures for the mp3. With images, text, and audio I really believe that this could take FF posts to a whole other level. Any possibility we might see this in the future?

I'm glad you could find it useful. There are a number of features that are less-known by new FriendFeed users which we've been taking for granted for months. Sometimes I think I'm stating the obvious, but it's good to know this will benefit you. The Mail2FF addition is something I use frequently and I'm pleased to know they've adopted it so whole heartedly.
