I love when new technology doesn't just replace old ways of doing things but also improves upon it. We will always write things by hand at certain places and times, so why not incorporate computing power and someday social networking capabilities? Hey, my pen is following your pen... let's share notes...not during class of course. That's virtual cheating ya know. :)
I'll just block ya if you keep trying, bub.

Great stuff

Re: Could Google Reader Become the Next Friendfeed?

It's about time. I've been asking why Google hasn't done more with reader for years.
Look at what 3 guys have done at Streamy... http://Streamy.com
Not just a feed reader but friendfeed like conversations long ago along with meebo like IM intgration for all messengers as well as integration with other networks including twitter, facebook, etc.
it's amazing stuff. I think Google will buy streamy and incorporate into google reader.
Yahoo has been just as slow with delicious, only recently adding good social features for sharing.
Sleeping giants are frustrating.

Re: You are SO unfollowed!

Excellent analysis and experiment. Most of us can't even imagine what it would be like to try to follow over 100K on twitter. I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity but there's a strange dilemma that happens naturally on social networks...the more you increase the quality of your work (tweets, blog posts, videos, etc.) the more your network grows and thus the catch 22. It's a nice problem to have, Robert. Still, I guess it's a good thing that we have the option to do a social reboot (twitter bankruptcy) and start all over again at ground zero. The lesson learned is that we should handpick whom we follow or add to our network from the beginning. That's what I do and so glad I never used an auto follow back script.

Thanks for doing this and sharing your experience with us. Also thanks for following me again. You were the first person I ever followed on twitter (thanks to http://dcortesi.com/tools/my-first-follow/) and I remember how thrilled I was that Scoble followed me back. This time, it feels even more special because I know it wasn't a script and that you made the decision to do so this time.

Re: A Brief and Informal Twitter Etiquette Guide

Wonderful guide. I would add this. It's ok to share your honest opinion about things as long as you respect the opinions of others. There's a major difference between fact and opinion and you know what they say about opinions, right?

For example, someone will tweet "I think Amy Adams is gorgeous!"
some might reply "I think she's a dog!" which isn't nice (and insane lol)
The better response would've been "Really? She doesn't do much for me"
It doesn't disrespect the original opinion and shares your own (however wrong!) opinion at the same time. :)

Re: Taking Down the Rockstars Page

Chris
Thanks for all the time you've put into that Rock stars page. I remember how excited I was when I saw myself on there as a noob blogger. I also enjoyed checking all the wonderful blogs from fellow Brogan fans and friends.

I do think there's a way to provide the same time of thing without requiring any work on your part. You can setup an Alltop type page where your readers could add their own info and link. I use Crowdstatus for dadomatic writers.
http://crowdstatus.com/Dadomaticcrowd.aspx

However, you would need to get someone to be monitor to delete the occasional troll who would spam the listing. Still, it would be cool to see everyone's listing.

In any event, thanks again.

Pai

Re: It’s Only a Matter of Time

Great stuff Douglas!

Re: snob-iety (snŏb'ī'ĭ-tē) adj. - f*cking rad

Type your comment here.
Here's mine http://paisano.posterous.com/my-tweetpsych-anal...

Re: snob-iety (snŏb'ī'ĭ-tē) adj. - f*cking rad

Perfect description...
primordial: first, earliest or original; characteristic of the earliest stage of the development of an organism.

Conceptual: relating to concepts or mental conception; existing in the imagination

Emotional: oh boy we know about this one.. :)

Re: Beatrice Dobbs Carter - Onto Her True Life

Todd
I am so sorry for your loss. I've gotten tired of seeing tons of retweets in my stream to stuff I've already read before. I made the decision recently to stop retweeting the most popular stuff that most people read such as techcrunch and mashable (yea I know, I write for them but they have no problems getting RT, trust me!).
I don't want to contribute to the noise pollution on twitter and want to make every tweet count. Yes, this means not sharing something that would be NEW to those few that don't subscribe to those popular blogs but so be it. I think overall it's a good move to make.
However, I will still share stories and posts to the less popular and more obscure blogs like this one, no offense, Louis! I mean in relationship to the general public and most of my followers.
I will also share pieces from other lesser known resources... hopefully sharing valuable information that MOST, not all, people would never have found otherwise or not until the big blogs catch wind of it. I enjoy breaking news and info before the larger slower outfits do.

Thanks for the food for thought. Like you said, there's no one right way to do this stuff but it doesn't hurt to share our ideas on possible methods that might contribute more to the community rather than merely serve ourselves better.

Pai

Re: Moved my 41400 Comments into Disqus

Great move Chris. I've been using Disqus for a long time now and it only gets better with time. Daniel Ha and crew keep adding more social goodness to it like Friendfeed and twitter integration plus much much more.

I love that I don't even have to login now to comment on here which only encourages people to comment more often. Yea, I know it doesn't take long to enter a name, password and website but every second and every click counts when you go to many blogs to comment.

Sweet...

Pai

Re: Building Your Twitter Network with TwitterMASS

Thanks guys for the comments. I agree that the followfriday hashtag isn't the best one to use with twittermass because it doesn't allow you to follow any of the names that people include in their tweet with the followfriday hashtag. Twittermass only follows the person that nominated all of those people that you might want to follow. The only way you can follow those nominated people is if they in turn use the followfriday hashtag themselves.

Re: Live Avatars

Type your comment here.
@Tojosan
Good point about seeing old familiar faces and the benefits of not changing it often. While I agree that there's something comforting about that, I also think we should have the option to change it whenever we want and a lot quicker than it is today. It's all about options and customization. We also need to be able to port our face across different platforms (as Gravatar does to a degree) without having to go thru the same uploading process every time.

Thanks for chiming in...

Pai

Re: Social Media Juggling

Ha ha! I like Brightkite and think it's a wonderfully conceived and implemented service. Heck, I even reviewed the big announcement of their slick iPhone app on Mashable. However, I found myself yawning with my own check ins and those of people I find otherwise fascinating!

So, I use Brightkite like I do Doppler and tripit....for special trips and occasions only. Even then I don't do it for some reason. I think it it were built into twitter of Friendfeed I might be inclined to do it more often for special events...so you could post a message like "I'm at the Atlanta Renaissance hotel for a vmware meetup...come join us if you're around" and the location is checked in... other than that...I don't know how often I'd use it.

Re: To Friend or Not To Friend the Ex.

Thanks for sharing such a personal experience. I too find it interesting how Friendfeed was left off such a list. Yes, it launched in 2007 but it only hit its stride in 2008 and has gained tremendous traction and I believe it's one of the most important services available today because of the way it aggregates all this stuff. Also worth noting is that they lumbered into an extremely crowded space and has emerged as the clear king of social aggregation.
Twhirl, likewise, could have been covered since they also made tremendous inroads with the micro-blogging crowd thanks to its partnership with Seesmic and the above mentioned Friendfeed. While TweetDeck is nice, Twhirl has become invaluable to a vast majority of twitter users. (ironically they were experiencing issues last night and this morning due to Twitter API change).

Nit-picking, I know. There is always going to be differences of opinion when it comes to opinion pieces. Still, nice wrap up for the year that was.

Pai

Re: iPhone Google Mobile App

Sweet. It all started back in the day as a network admin that needed to be connected so my servers can notify me whenever something went wrong and something ALWAYS goes wrong in the middle of the night. Back then it was all dial-up and alphanumeric pagers but it was a Godsend. Remember the sound of beep-beep, beep-beep? Anyway, that evolved thanks to the Blackberry and its amazing little black box that let you respond to the messages. The rest was history. Now, we've grown to expect connectivity which is the norm. I look at it the same way I do with Tivo and DVR. I will never go back to videotapes again. While I can and do make efforts to go offline for long stretches such as when we went to on our Disney vacation for 10 days, I love knowing that I can stay connected 24/7 without a problem.

Re: louisgray.com: Every Night, I Sleep Next to My iPhone

Nice post. I do the same thing with my Pai-phone. I must admit that I did the same thing for years with my Blackberry and my iPaq. However, they've both been replaced by this amazing device. I've been keeping an eye on the G1 and Storm and Bold but the iPhone is still the king.
Some think it's silly to be connected 24/7 but I don't. I think it's wonderful that we can all connect and communicate anytime anywhere. Love my aircard for my laptop as well for that reason.
It's only going to get better when it comes to speed and features for mobile devices and laptops as the think line continues to blur.
