Well, I average 175,000 miles a year and UA is my preferred airline. I can count on excellent personalized service with them and their partners, from check-in thru flight and baggage claim. I have had no problems whatsoever using my miles for personal travel, or for our kids to use, to travel on the desired dates and routes. I do not get that kind of attention out of Delta, my second choice, and I avoid as much as I can the others: AA, AS, or SW.

For me, it's a "when in Rome" kind of thing: Tip in the US & Canada, sometimes in Europe, but usually not in Asia - not because it's expected but as a token of appreciation for personalized service, which is what's provided when making up the bed, cleaning the toilet, and serving food. This practice makes more sense to me than this "living wage" business if you consider that service jobs are stepping stones on the career path and not destinations in and of themselves. I tip because I can and it's a choice that I make, and I'm not forced into it by paying premium prices at high-end hotel chains or restaurants.

I fly 170k miles a year, with about a third of that internationally. I nearly spewed when I saw the author yearns for LA-style customer service, which for me is only one notch above San Francisco for the worst across the USA. Mind you, I'm speaking in general terms here - I have a great deal of affinity for airline personnel and what they have to deal with, day in and day out. As for a quota on infants: For this granddad who doesn't see his grandchildren nearly enough, it doesn't bother me in the least. If it did, I have my headphones with me. Take some personal responsibility and deal with it yourself instead of whining to someone else to solve your problem.
