If you stay within your data cap — a flat fee for a given maximum amount — the cost of viewing an iAd (or anything else) is zero. You're not paying by the bit.

If you exceed your data cap, you're in fresh billing territory.

It's fair to say that a multi-megabyte iAd increases your chances of reaching or exceeding your data cap. But assigning a hypothetical iAd price by dividing your data allowance by the size misrepresents the situation. You're paying for that allowance whether you use it or not.

iAds are exclusive to iPhones, but iAds are not the sole source of in-app advertising on iPhones. Apps may use other ad networks as well. This is indeed a general issue that will affect all smartphone users with capped data plans.

Of course, the Lexus ad on this page also counts toward a user's data cap.
