This specific discussion is not about the tragedy of this girl being missing but the raw ability of a newspaper our size to cover an out-of-town story such as this. The questions I have been responding to presuppose that we would have been better to ignore the story entirely rather than post the AP article which we felt was newsworthy and potentially helpful.

And yes the wording in my original response was inappropriate given the circumstances and I have edited it in light of your comment.

Thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Teen believed to have fled home; parents worried

Actually those are both questions on my part (leading questions yes) so I am comfortable with my punctuation. You could take issue with my questions being unfair or snarky, but I was genuinely curious as to people's concern with our coverage of this story.

So we are just going to have to agree to disagree. The reason some stories are classified as 'news briefs' is because they are often little more than a headline and a paragraph of text. The argument you make returns to my original question - if we feel a story is only worth a brief mention in print or online - since a brief is only part of a story should we simply not print it?

I would argue that people would probably rather see some mention of important events even if it means they need to search out other sites, from CNN.com to UnionLeader.com for more complete coverage.

Thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Teen believed to have fled home; parents worried

Thanks for the response. No, in this case it is not feasible for us to track down an image for this story. The article was moved on the AP wire and we thought it worth posting. However AP did not transmit an image. Hopefully people who are concerned or interested in the story can find it on other news sites as you did. It just is not possible for us (or any paper) to prioritize an effort like that over more local stories that demand our efforts as well.

Thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Teen believed to have fled home; parents worried

I am curious why the Telegraph would be expected to provide local coverage for a story in Raymond? We post the occasional state story from the Associated Press or other newspapers on the Web site. Unless the industry can manage to find a new business model to support local journalism more and more local stories will go uncovered. This has nothing to do with newspapers it includes whatever form of journalism might supplement or replace the work that newspapers do. Whatever form it takes it is still very expensive.

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Much riding on Telegraph’s venture into paid online content

Judging from your past comments you obviously have long-term complaints about the quality of our education coverage. While your specific points could be valid, they are also entirely subjective and I doubt any counter arguments I could make would change your opinion. I would invite you to write a letter to the editor or contact our lead education reporter Michael Brindley or city editor Jonathan Van Fleet. I can assure you they are both quite well versed on NECAP and would be happy to hear from anyone who has insight into the issue in our local schools.

In any case my question would be - how many stories on Nashua or Hudson or Merrimack NECAP scores were printed or broadcast in any media other than the Telegraph? The argument is not that the Telegraph is perfect it is that we are trying to figure out how to develop a new business model to allow us to improve (or at least maintain) our coverage because those kinds of stories that no one else covers are in fact extremely important to the community.

Thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Much riding on Telegraph’s venture into paid online content

This is actually a fascinating topic of debate, not just in Nashua but around the country as local media outlets come under economic pressures. But - I would suggest that newspapers in general have by far the largest number of journalists covering local news. I would be interested if someone wanted to count the number of Nashua, Hudson, Merrimack, Milford etc stories published in the Telegraph each week v.s. those broadcast on WMUR and WSMN combined. It is not comparable and to claim otherwise is disingenuous.

So, the real question is not do local papers have a hyper-inflated opinion of themselves but rather if a local paper closes who/what would replace that need for local news. And what business model would be used to pay for reporters to be out covering the zoning board and school board and high school sports and the hundred other local events each week. WMUR is not going to do it, they have an entire state to cover with a small staff as it is.

So local papers are not going away as they are the best, and realistically sometimes the only, media that cares about very local news. But, until we (the newspaper and the community) figure out how to pay for local journalism in the digital era the debate will continue.

Thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Chief justice decries court budget cuts

Timmins works for the Concord Monitor - their contact info can be found at concordmonitor.com

Re: Arborist avoids jail for fatal felling

In fact he was not an arborist at the time of the accident but has since gained his certification.

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Changes coming for NH news sites

Yes, any print subscription qualifies.

thanks

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Reaction mixed to Telegraph plan to charge for online news

Print subscribers will receive full access to the Web site.

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Changes coming for NH news sites

If you get the Sunday paper then you are already paying and full online access is included with the print edition.

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Changes coming for NH news sites

Registration is not active yet. Now the number varies greatly depending on the market, if you include home delivery and single copy sales together, how you count Web and mobile devices, not to mention any free home delivery products. I don't have a percentage number but Telegraph products reach about 100,000 readers (print and online) in the local area.

Damon Kiesow
Managing Editor / Online

Re: Changes coming for NH news sites

I see thanks.

The drop-down ad basically is an interstitial as you point out in the links.
